point and shoot

by goodolejim - 7/23/09 4:14 PM

having just lost my 6 year old sony dsc I just decided I don't care, this is a good time to buy a new camera. I want a p&s with an optical viewfinder. Mostly I shoot outdoors in very bright sun (lakes, bonneville salt flats, river running etc) and the lcd screen just won't let me see what I'm doing. Rugged is important, features are not. 6 megapixcels has been ok in the past. I seem to ruin cameras in rivers or fill them with sand etc. Most new cameras I have looked at are either too much money or no optical viewfinder. Any suggestions would be welcome.

There are very few small cameras with optical viewfinders anymore.

Here is a link to all of the current "rugged" cameras:

None of them have a viewfinder.

Some of the Canon SD series of cameras have an optical viewfinder.
The ones with a 2.5 inch LCD.
If it has a 3.0 inch LCD, no viewfinder ... not enough room left for a viewfinder.
The new Canon A1000, A1100 and A1200 cameras have optical viewfinders.

Most of the Sony W series of cameras have an optical viewfinder.
Except for the three newest models.

Most of the big zoom cameras (all brands) have electronic viewfinders.
Some of the premium cameras (like the Canon G10) have optical viewfinders.

Hot off the press.
The Rugged cameras comparison test was just updated to include two more cameras.
But still no fiewfinders.
