the environment

by lfpink - 7/19/09 2:18 PM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

dear readers,
I have looked at all the posts and replies on this subject but I'm missing a very strong argument to use refills ;-) is it all about money?
If you throw away a used cartridge you will not help the environment, you throw some heavy metals (chip) and plastics away.

btw, I have for about 6 years ago attended a seminar about refills in the USA, if I recall right, there are throwing away about 8 cartridge per second.

I'm using a lot of ink, but don't throw away a lot of garbage.
There are some major ink producers in the USA, inks from Korea and Taiwan are mostly not to bad, most failures what you see on clocking is air so let the printer settle after refill

it's the image that works, so print along,

Two rules of thumb I use...

by reverendkickstand - 7/19/09 2:40 PM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If the printer has a built-in print head: NO
If the print head is replaced with the cartridge: OK

I ruined a large format Epson by using an aftermarket ink tank. Not cheap to replace!

I turn in my old cartridges to offset the price of new ones

by plagueboy - 7/19/09 7:44 PM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

When you return your empty cartridges to Staples, they give you three dollars of staples rewards dollars. Since our cartridges only cost $9, that's 30% that we get off of replacement cartridges. It makes buying ink worthwhile.

Another option for regular document printing is to buy a laser printer, if you haven't already. You can get way more prints on a toner cartridge than on a black ink cartridge. Save the inkjet for photos and graphics.

3rd party carts for me

by TJRatfink - 7/19/09 10:12 PM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have an inexpensive Canon printer, use 3rd party carts exclusively and have been for at least 5 years. When I can get black carts for $1.50 and color for $2.00, I'm buying them! I have a friend who works for Lexmark and he says they make more money from carts than they do from printers. After seeing their cart prices, I can see why!

Ink Cartridges

by wazus - 7/20/09 7:04 AM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

After many years of owning many printers and the price of replacing cartridges, I did the next best thing and thankful I did. I switched to the Kodak printer which gave me the same results as all the rest of the other printers with one exception the the ink is much much cheaper and lasts longer. The combo pack of one black and one color cartridge cost $22.00 as compared to the average of $70.00. How can you beat that? Try it you will like it.

not bad, but......

I've seen those comml's too, but $20 for a black & color combo pack still doesn't beat my $3.50!

OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and ref

by writtle_dave - 7/20/09 8:13 AM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

We have been using third party catridges for about 3 years, with no obvious harm to the printer(Epson D88)
Anyway, printers are so cheap that it is easy to justify the use of cheap ink.
My only concern is with printing photoes, the quality of print is not so good, but we do not do much of that anyway.

OEMs and Refills. YES to both

by papgas - 7/20/09 1:24 PM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I bought the HP Deskjet 970cxi when it first came out in the market (May, 2001) and I still use it every day for both photo and document print outs at my shop. I also use it for direct copies from the scanner, 10 to 15 per day.
Average consumption for the last 5 years is 2.3 black cartridges 1.6 color ones per month.
At the beginning I used to replace cartridges with the original ones but after some six months a fellow came to the neighborhood and opened a place with all kinds of refills.
From that on I always have three sets of refills at my shop and a few times that cartridges have stopped working the guy changed them with OEM ones with an extra charge 0.8 euro.
Printing quality is excellent and refilled colors always have been identical to the originals. I check this every time I change the color cartridge by printing an array of colors and comparing it with a print out kept from the time I was buying the originals
Right now the cost for original is as follows:
HPC6578A (color) 57 euros or US$ 81 and HP51645A (black) 28 euros or US$ 39.80.
Refills cost me 14 euros and 11 euros (some US$ 19.90 and US$ 15.65) respectively.
So, the fact is that – in my case – instead of paying US$ 159 for original cartridges, I pay only US$ 59 for refills per month, I have excellent printing quality, and I never had any malfunction.
My word? Just give it a try and see how it works for you.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a dedicated refill expert doing business in the neighborhood. Consider yourself very lucky.

I agree

I agree, I'm sticking with my reseller, which is the #1 manufacture in the US. I have never had a problem for myself or my clients (I'm an IT outsource professional) and if we did, it's guaranteed. I've been to the factory, I've see the quality control, not many people can say that.

My experience with 2 alternatives to OEM

by usercentre - 7/22/09 10:50 AM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I tried a continuous ink system (CIS) on my Epson R300. The CIS contains ink cartridges which fill themselves up from an ink reservoir mounted outside the printer. The ink and cartdridge are connected via small tubes. Set up was not easy but not rocket science either. Because ink was mounted outside my printer I bought a low level storage container for the printer to sit in in case of ink leakage.

I'd read some reviews about the CIS before purchase. They either sang the praises of the system claiming it works flawlessly, or claimed it doesn't work at all, or well for a few pages and then fails. My experience is the latter. Air pockets appeared in the tubes and I ended up wasting time attempting to unblock rather than print.

I recently tried an alternative system whereby the chip on cartridges can sit permanently in the printer and you can then replace inks with $2.50 unchipped cartridges. While this works ok, it seems that the system is snagging my printer carriage and I'm concerned that it will eventually wear out.

I wish there was an option to buy higher capacity OEM cartridges. The cost savings for 'compatible' cartridges are immense but there's always drawbacks. All inkjet printer manufacturers seem intent on charging a small fortune for a tiny cartridge that is no good for photographers or high capacity users. Lasers are not really a viable option. Manufacturers may be losing out on the compatible cartridges but why do they insist on making it more difficult to use such instead of competing by offering higher capacity cartridges? The way prices are, if it's the same price or cheaper to buy a new printer to get a full set of cartridges this is what people are going to do. Then both the manufacturer and (to an extent) the consumer lose.

www.ink.co.uk

Have a look at the above web site they are the cheapest I have found for compatible cartridges, they are also extra capacity. I have been using them for my Brother DCP130C printer for over 12 months and pay £1.27 per cartridge + postage a set cost about £7.50 inc pp. I think that they print better than the OEM ones.

Kodak ESP 7 wireless all-in-one printer ---

by SeniorCitizenNerd - 7/26/09 12:45 PM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

In February 2009 , we purchased the Kodak ESP 7 wireless all-in-one printer as their advertisement stated that this printer’s cartridges would print three times the amount of pages as comparable inkjet printers and that the color ink would only be 14.99 and the black 9.99. Since February we have replaced both color and black cartridges three times in less than six months. I contacted the Kodak tech people and they weren't much help.

OEM inkjet cartridges are generally better

by hudgins77 - 7/27/09 6:29 AM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I work for a company as the only IT person and I order all the inkjet and toner cartridges. After doing this for 10 years I can tell you that OEM cartridges are generally better than 3rd-party or refill cartridges. The aftermarket cartridges are usually hit or miss. Sometimes they work well and other times they don't. I try to save money where I can when ordering cartrides because I order a lot of cartridges monthly, but I have found that in the long run 3rd-party & refills don't really save any money and are usually more hassle than they are worth. Most 3rd-party & refill companies will provide a replacement for bad cartridges, but I've also had the replacements fail. I still occasionally try new brands of replacements when they come out but they all continue to put out more bad cartridges than good so I'm pretty much buy OEM exclusively.

Fillserv.com

by haloviper - 8/21/09 7:32 PM In reply to: OEM inkjet cartridges vs. third-party ink cartridges and refills? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I buy all of my ink and refill supplies from
fillserv.com and I haven't had any problems. I
either refill cartridges or buy their remanufactured
cartridges for four different HP printers and two
different Epson printers that we use in our business.
The best deal is this, buy any one of the HP Photosmart C7000 or C8000 series printers that use 6 cartridges. Fillserv sells empty cartridges that are made to be refilled with self resetting chips on them. Buy them and the refill ink and you are all set. For example, one of the HP printers we use heavily is a Photosmart C7280. I have to refill the cartridges about every two weeks so I've refilled them about 18 times so far and they still work great and the printer works great and when you put the cartridge in the printer it even says "Genuine HP Cartridge"!
