Yet, playing them is another matter all together, there are many third party software apps that you can buy for this purpose but here's a free one.:

I recommend you use wondershare dvd ripper platinum, it is able to rip dvds to computer in 1:1. it is also capable to save dvd to computer in regular video format.
Not like some ordinary DVD rippers, wondershare can rip even copyright protected DVDs, so just give it a shot.

if you are using mac os, you can use the mac version of wondershare

If want be free, Handbrake will be a choice, but output not good as Wondershare. And you need to have a .NET component installed before you install it. So, be professional and be free.
