Bose speakers - Help!

by jmandre77 - 7/5/09 4:27 AM

Hi, I'm new to this forum so forgive my lack of technical know-how. I recently moved into a new house and the guy who lived here before left Bose Jewel speakers (rear) in the tv room as they were wired through the wall. I wanted to use the speakers, but didn't want to splash out on the system he had - Bose Lifestyle 43, so bought a Bose Accoustimass 6 Sub & front speakers. I did this as I went in to a hi-fi sop and the guy told me I could only use the Bose speakers with a Bose Sub/Amp.
So I've just hooked it all up and low and behold the rear speakers don't work. Can anyone give any advice as to how I can get them working, or indeed if the jewel cube speakers will work with the Acoustimass 6? The rear speakers are the jewel cube (small ones), whereas the ones that came with the Accoustimass 6 are cube speakers but not quite so small. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
JM

You did not set up

surround sound properly on your receiver. Pick a setting that gives you 5.1 output and it should work, assuming you have connected the bass module to the receiver correctly.

for the quick response. The problem was that I had plugged the rear speakers into the wrong sockets on my Onkyo amp (doh!). I changed them around and now the rear right speakers work but not the left. Before I realised my mistake, I wanted to test the cables so I plugged one of the new bose speakers (cube not jewel cube) into the rear left wires. The speaker didn't work but I'm worried that I may have damaged something (the cable) by testing it as now when I plug the original jewel cube speakers back they don't work. Is it possible to damage the cables in this way?

Thanks again

Can't you

visually check the connectors of cables to see if they are damaged? Cables don't die unless the are broken by force or vaporized by short circuit with high current. If you did neither, cable is ok.

Here is the answer

Hello. I see you are trying to incorporate Bose Jewel Cube speakers with an Accoustimass system. Bose's speakers are proprietary to their subwoofers. In other words the Jewel Cubes will not work with the Accoustimass system. The accoustimass system's subwoofer is intended and designed to drive the Accoustimass cubes and nothing else. The Jewel Cubes need different power needs and are proprietary to sub which they came with. The Sub that comes with the Jewel Cubes has a built in amplifier for all the Cubes in the system and itself. The amplification specs are not the same for the Accoustimass Cubes and the Jewel Cubes. The only way to make them work is through a lifestyle system. If you do hook them up to anything other, it will damage the speaker. Sorry for the dead end.

thanks for all responses, much appreciated. It's weird that one set of jewel cube speakers work with the acoustimass, but maybe they're not working as they should - hard to tell. Anyway, thanks again, looks like I'll either have to buy a lifestyle system or just not use the rear speakers.
Cheers
JM

Re jewel cube connection

by andbut22 - 7/16/09 3:13 PM In reply to: thanks by jmandre77

Hello there. I have bose JEWEL cube speaker for the centre which is connected directly to the amplifier (pioneer 7.1) and an acoustimass 10 system for the remaining channels and an acoustimass 5 to complete the 7.1. I have added an active Jamo subwoofer to the system for that extra punch

The problem that you have is that you are connecting the speakers in the wrong manner. The jewel cube can be connected directly to the amplifier whilst the normal Cube speaker cannot, and must go into their Acoustimass subwoofer

Try this:

Connect the back JEWEL cube speakers DIRECTLY to the amplifier(onkyo) in the speaker ports surround left and surround right

On the other hand connect the CUBE speakers (not the jewel cube) that came with the acoustimass system to the acoustimass subwoofer. Then connect the acoustimass subwoofer to the centre, left and right channel of your onkyo receiver. This should do the trick.

If you connect the BOSE JEWEL CUBE directly to the receiver and they don t work, check the speaker wire

That's interesting and good to know, thanks. The only problem I foresee is that the wiring (built in to the wall) is Bose wiring and will not plug in to the Onkyo Amp (the plug ends look like RCA plugs). Do you know if I can get an adapter so that they will plug in?

Thanks again
JM

BOSE wiring

by andbut22 - 7/17/09 3:06 PM In reply to: Thanks by jmandre77

although bose has rca plugs at both end, they seem to be normal wiring. When you cut off the plugs take note which is + an -. If i am not mistaken the plain wire is + and the ribbed wire is -

(NT) Specific to sub? That sucks big time

seems to be

apparently it is specific wiring for Bose, the speakers used to be attached to a Bose Lifestyle 48. Don't know if that helps or makles a difference?

Correct! Here is why

by sirpaul1 - 7/18/09 4:45 AM In reply to: Here is the answer by JeepMysteryProb

Each Bose system speaker set has the speaker amplifier and equalizer built into the subwoofer. And of course with each and every "upgrade", these specs change. Your mismatched speakers will, at best, not perform optimally; and, at worst, not work at all (read "die". This would be due to incorrect power and frequency specs. You will have this problem when 'mixing' any Bose speaker sets that come with subwoofers.
I really doubt that the problem is the cables, but you can test these with a simple continuity or SMALL voltage check.

If speakers are just elecromechanical

by tfarney - 8/22/09 7:55 AM In reply to: Bose 5x Lifestyle 48 Series IV Speakers - Black by Kyriakos36

then fineggleing with 'em will make 'em work.
Check the impedance, consider impedance matching (resistors are available) if open circuit, look inside for busted continuity, maybe why he left 'em It might be as simple as a solder joint gone.
Check them for function and continuity, polarity with a c or d cell battery. You MUST hear a little "pop" If the element moves out, the pole attached to the positive IS the positive, the neg is the common or ground.
Radioshack adapters or a knife will make an RCA wire a pair of naked conductors, the center is pos ther coaxial wraparound is neg. touch the battery
