Firmware updates for the PN63B590?

by citivas - 7/8/09 6:57 AM

I am concerned that there have been no firmware updates for the 590. Unlike its LCD cousins, all of the similar plasma models have had multiple firmware updates so far (some up to rev 9) except the 590 (including its nearesr similar models the 550, 560 and 650). It seems unlikely the 590 is uniquely free of the issues those firmware updates are addressing.

I realize the 590 was a commissioned model originally for Best Buy. Does that make it a lower priority for updates? Is there a plan to provide a firmware update for the 590 soon and in general will it receive updates in a similar timeframe as the similar plasmas with the same software?

In particular, is there any status on when the Cinema Smooth glitch will be addressed in the firmware?

Thank you.

Problems With the 590?

by nacho1162 - 7/15/09 5:06 PM In reply to: Firmware updates for the PN63B590? by citivas

As to my knowledge I have seen no major issues posted about the PN63B590 that would require a firmware update. I have checked the AVS forums and have seen no postings about the 590 having any problems with "cinema smooth" or buzzing noise (at least not more than any other plasma TV). I have had my 590 since June 3rd and it has worked flawlessly. Also,I don't think its really an exclusive model to Best Buy. I purchased mine from a competing retailer and have seen it readily available from other on-line retailers. However, I would think if it was mainly a Best Buy model it would in fact make it a very high priority for Samsung to fix any potential problems. Best Buy is the largest electronics retailer in the country and pretty I'm sure Samsung would do any thing it could to keep them happy.

AVS Forums is full of posts about these issues

There are multiple extremely active topics about the buzz problem on AVS Forums that never leave the front page because they get fresh postngs every hour or so, so I'm not sure what you mean you when say you haven't seen any postings about the buzz issue. The post even includes a POLL and over 30% of respondents are reporting a buzz issue far in excess of what is normal for a plasma -- loud enough to hear over program volume from 15 feet away from the set. It's a major issue causing some to return their sets and others to avoid getting them. And many of the posters with the buzz problem have specifically have reported having the 590.

As for the Cinema Smooth big, this is also an active topic at AVS, though there is conflicting reports on whether it has affected any 590 users specifically. It certainly is affecting most users of other models like the 650 and the 850/860.

Even the topics dedicated to the Panasonics and Pioneer sets have mentioned these two issues with the 2009 Samsungs because the reports of these issues are so common.

I was only refering to the PN63B590, not all Samsungs

I just checked the AVS forums and did a search for PN63B590 buzzing and PN63B590 cinema smooth. I only found one person who said they had a PN63B590 with a noticeable buzzing problem. I found none who claimed to have a 590 with any issues about cinema smooth. I am not saying that there are not any problems with some of Samsungs new "B" series plasmas, because clearly some individuals are having problems. However, in your original post you never once mention if you are experiencing any of these problems with your PN63B590. It just sounded like you wanted a firmware update because everyone else was getting one?

You did say it was originally commissioned for Best Buy, not an exclusive. My bad.
