We bought a 50 inch plasma HDTV (not a Samsung) in 2006, just when prices began to drop. The resolution is 1080i, but we haven't noticed any deterioration in quality with cable HDTV or a Blu-Ray DVD player. In all, we've been very happy with it. The color has not faded and it remains bright in a variety of light conditions and from various viewing angles. Today we would have 1080p for less money, but we would have missed almost three years of viewing pleasure. About the only drawbacks of plasma I note are the heavy weight of the unit and the rather high power consumption.
I went with a 50' plasma but are very dissapointed with it and your customer service and warranty. My TV made a buzzing noise and the popped which left a huge crack on the inside of the panel and Samsung is saying they wont fix it or replace it because they have never heard of there tv doing this on its own. But I have been online all day asking people if they ever had this problem with a samsung and I found that alot of people have had the same problem with the same results. If I had known that Samsung tv are so defective I would have never purchased it
In my opinion the 6 series has the best value/feature set that samsung or anybody else offers. Low power consumption, enhanced framerate (120hz), tons of adjustments, widgets, picture quality, etc. The list could go on and on. Now if only I could my bd-p3600 to play nicely!!!
Samsung Televisions: LCD or Plasma? Definitely go with the LCD. Less heat, more options. Good all round flat panel is the LN40b650
LCD for me.
I do accept that plasma is superior as display technology as far as display and pic quality is concerned. *HOWEVER*, no matter how much
the manufacturers tout their improvement of plasma panels against burn in, actions speak louder than words. Unless they back their words by warranty by covering the screen itself, it is all empty words. If they are so sure about the improvements, they should back it by their warranty. As long as they do not do that, it means there will still be problems in the future. That was the ONLY factor that made me push into buying LCD.
I purchased the LA46A950 - took a couple of months to decide !!
I previously had a 30" CRT that seemed fine and I wondered if a larger TV would cause problems showing up signal imperfections!!
But as I looked around the shops I noticed that you could stand only a meter away and the picture looked Ok - you didn't need to be on the other side of the room!
I was reluctant to purchase a Plasma after hearing about "burn-in" and other problems with their longevity. When the LCD prices came down and a computer magazine I read gave a review stating that the LCD backlit screen was hard to distinguish from Plasma, I started investigating them.
I had looked at the Sony and had generally decided to go between 40-50". When I saw the options on the 950 for connecting to a network and plugging in USB sticks, I decided that I would rather have the 46" with these options than the 55" without !!
I have just discovered that my Windows Home Server will stream video and pictures (& music I presume - have not tried!) to the TV directly (through my internet router/hub) - works great - it is much better than the Samsung supplied software - which works Ok - but takes hours to "update" if you want to include new files. New files on WHS are there immediately - just go up a directory on the TV and down again !!

I have the 46b630... i guess i'm a comparitive shopper. When i research a new device, i look at what the top specs are, then i see what model has on average the highest specs verse cost comparision verse brand name.
i never really looked closely at the plasma, because it seemed all the specs i was familiar with (contrast ratio, 120mhz) didn't really apply. thus, i had no reference point to start at.
plus, the plasmas seemed more physically cumbersome and heavy. Not sure if thats really true, but that was my impression.
Plasma or LCD?
I went for the Led tv
What did you choose?
I choose for the eu40B8000
Why did you choose it?
I did go for a 40 inch because the view distance i have is to short for the 46 inch about 2.5 meters
I choose for the 8000 serie because i found the colour deep and the contrast and the overall picture beter then the 6000 and 7000 serie tv
that the shop owner had show me togehter
I bought a led because i found the picture nicer then that from the other lcd tv's and like the deep blacks and de clear white from the led tv
Are you happy with your decision?
Yes i am happy the only thing i dn't like is that i don't get the you tube tv widget for my B8000 and the samsung productbook say's its is there for the netherlands
If you could, would you go back and buy the other? (Why or why not?)
No i like the picture i have
Ps soorry for the bad english
After purchasing an LCD, It seemed like I was watching a large Eco friendly notebook! The white may have appeared to be whiter, and although the black seemed inky. It appeared more and more each day to look like a cartoon/tattoo type of black. My SD cable looked terible on the LCD. Although turning on NR/and reducing Sharpness helped a little. It was not enough. When I first turned on my new Samsung PN50B650 Plasma, I noticed an imediate improvement in picture quality over the LCD. The Plasma picture for sure is the closest to a CRT. Although there pushing LCD's, probably due to being Eco friendly. It is still not perfected technology. You have to deal with motion blur. The expensive of getting a 240hz set, and viewing angle. Again, the black on an LCD looks like it was thrown up on the screen and is just hanging there. The Plasma picture was pure and rich ion color. I found the black on the Samsung Plasma's to be excellant! SD sources also looked far better on my Plasma than they did on my LCD. Just because LCD's are popping up everywhere and seem to be the new trend, does not mean that they are better. LCD is just a trend. Plasma is coming back in a hard way. Just take a good look at a Pioneer KURO series of Plasma's, Samsung 860 Plasma, or the Panasonic V10 Plasma and then try to tell me that LCD looks better.
What did you choose? LG 42" LCD
Why did you choose it? Price, Size, Picture quality
Are you happy with your decision? Yes, the quality has been great!
If you could, would you go back and buy the other? No, because of the sliding glass doors on the opposite wall lets in too much light for daytime viewing of a Plasma
I went for the LCD. I think plasmas use too much power and I am not convinced that the earlier problems with burn-in is solved. Also, plasmas generate a LOT of radio noise in the shortwave spectrum. I do see some uneven light bleed-through on the 46' lcd, but not more than is to be expected. So far very happy with the new panel.
New plasmas are actually better in power consumption than LCD's. LCDs have a back light that is ALWAYS on (unless u buy one of the new LED lit ones), whereas plasmas draw current only when they get brighter and are hence more power conscious than LCDs. Look at new Panasonic G15 plasmas, they are superb & plasma picture is ALWAYS better than an LCD.
Having said that however, I still went with an LCD, purely becoz of burn in issues. No matter how much the manufacturers downplay burn in, unless they back it up with a warranty, it is all empty words ![]()
Plasma or LCD?
I currently own a 40" Samsung LCD,the model with the matte screen and bezel that was replaced by the shiny screen, shiny bezel HDTVs. I love it. I am in the market for 3 more HDTVs. I bought a Samsung 32 inch 6 series that has a shiny screen and a shiny bezel. And also a Vizio that has a matte screen and a matte bezel. I am returning the Samsung HDTV because of the shinyness and the reflections I get from windows, ceiling lights, etc. The eyestrain from looking at the reflections is both annoying and harmful.
What did you choose? Why did you choose it?
I chose LCD over plasma because the power requirements are much lower and the heat generated by the plasma units is bad when I have to air condition the house.
Are you happy with your decision?
I am very happy with my decision to purchase the early model Samsung 40" with the matte screen and matte bezel. I am not happy with the later unit with shiny screen and bezel and will return it.
If you could, would you go back and buy the other? (Why or why not?)
I like my earlier Samsung and would buy only Samsung if they had matte units. I will probably be buying several other HDTVs by the CES in Las Vegas in January and wish that Samsung will have some matte units by then. Will they or not?
hiker0222,
The UltraClear panels (or the "shiny panel" as some refer to it) is actually a compliment to the Samsung panels that allow for brighter colors and a more robust picture. So it's considered a 'step up' feature on the books.
Now, does that necessarily translate into a benefit for every consumer in every situation? No, but the color reproduction and the ability to reach the specifications because of the panel is why it is considered such.
I think it's a good point to pass up, and this is certainly not the first time I've heard this. Matte units simply can't create the color spectrum that the UltraClear panels can.
