Choppy sound in every program

by Phil_Canyon - 7/11/09 6:08 PM

I am not sure when this started but it has been going on for a little while now. I have uninstalled the sound card and drivers once but haven't uninstalled the codecs. The sound is choppy in all programs and it is driving me crazy. if anyone has been able to remedy this, please shoot the answer my way.

Missing too many details.

But let's try the old issue. Read http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6142_102-0.html?threadID=349232&tag=forums06;forum-threads and try the DMA flip noted.

More info

by Phil_Canyon - 7/12/09 1:20 PM In reply to: Choppy sound in every program by Phil_Canyon

I am running windows xp service pack 2, recently re-installed. The choppiness just started over the last month. It is on a HP dv8300 laptop. 2gig processor, 2 gig ram, 160 gig hd and a 100 gig slave. Choppy sound occurs in every program, streaming, dvd, and mp3s.

Thanks

The DV8300 is a series.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 7/12/09 1:28 PM In reply to: More info by Phil_Canyon

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3179720 does show the usual MS UAA and the chipset drivers if someone reinstalled XP usually misses. I'd review the driver install instructions from HP and do that again.

Also, the exact model is needed plus the OS, plus how the OS came to be on this laptop and if it's a CTO, just say so.

Model

by Phil_Canyon - 7/12/09 1:49 PM In reply to: The DV8300 is a series. by R. Proffitt Moderator

EX177AV is the p/n. It is a different version (XP) than the original. I did have several driver issues upon install but this was a few months ago. The sound issues came later, for no apparent reason. The computer itself seems a little glitchy at times but I am not sure if it is a problem associated with this. I am just about to start over again. :(

Try the usual.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 7/12/09 5:57 PM In reply to: and by Phil_Canyon

Remember that XP degrades DMA modes with each read error and you never know unless you do the dma flip.

Same for drivers. I've lost count of how many times I've reinstalled such.

I checked your posts 3 times and still too little detail. Save me some steps by. Rebooting and then running HIJACKTHIS and post the log. What I'll look for are toxic combos or overlapping security software.

i haven't seen anything unusual in these, but I may not know exactly what I am looking for. I will work on the DMA flip also. Thanks for your help.

Look at al those "monitoring" services and such.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 7/13/09 5:39 AM In reply to: Log file by Phil_Canyon

Do you see how many monitoring programs you have?

But first.

1. Be tidy. Delete the line with (no file).
2. There is a current discussion about Zone Alarm. Consider something else until they sort that out again. Comodo?
3. See what you can do without. I am always ejecting Google bar/entries as we reduce/slim down back to stock settings.
4. I see ActiveSync. Not a bad thing but can point to possible USB devices that are talking constantly. For a test run, no PDA, Phone, Printers or such on USB. EVEN USB drives need to be removed.

5. KNOW WHY NameServer is in this list. It's your machine. KNOW WHY.

6. SKYPE. Fine, but it's been known to cause audio breakup at times. Backup and exit, disable that.

7. There looks to be a TV capture, recording service running. That is a CPU hog in every system I've seen.

and finally one that I can always do without.

8. Style XP.

Update

by Phil_Canyon - 7/13/09 2:25 PM In reply to: Look at al those "monitoring" services and such. by R. Proffitt Moderator

I need active sync, I do need the cap program but I really don't need it running all the time but I cannot seem to stop it from loading. Name server seems imperative to my internet connection. I will get rid of zone alarm and skype. I did the DMA switch with no change in the sound. I tried to import video from my DV video camera and it was super choppy.

How is check point firewall? I have ability for a free version offered from my net provider.

Thanx

Keep active sync BUT

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 7/13/09 3:39 PM In reply to: Update by Phil_Canyon

Don't plug any devices in.

As to DV choppy. That might be proper.

Reply to your top post with a little more detail such as how you connected it, the make, model of the camera and the capture software.

Sorry. The Zone Alarm, Checkpoint is the same. Try Comodo for now. I don't want to duplicate the current discussion on ZA or Checkpoint.

DV progs

by Phil_Canyon - 7/13/09 7:16 PM In reply to: Keep active sync BUT by R. Proffitt Moderator

I use DVD Xpress and Adobe Onlocation to extract video from my Canon ZR900. It is sadly looking like another format and install will be needed. I normally would not care except driver issues are always an issue with an HP notebook and a OS that isn't from their company.

I have removed Skype and ZA but still have choppy sound. No Comodo yet. Also i have uninstalled powerCinema as well.
