I have been having problems with my computer freezing up quite a bit for the last 6 months. I have changed hard drives, downloaded Tune-up Utilities, cleaned out my files, and cleaned out the inside of my computer and still it freezes up on me! It’s very annoying! I'll be right in the middle of something, then nothing responds and it freezes up! I am surprised that it hasn't frozen up, while I have been typing this problem! So, I end up having to hit the reset button and lose what I had up on my computer!
Here are my computer specs:
I have a custom made computer, which is about 3 years old, with an ASUS motherboard and parts.
An Intel Pentium D cpu
2Gigs of RAM
250 GB hard drive
DVD & CD drives
McAfee antivirus, Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes anti-malware, Super antispyware.
Nothing special here. Please someone help me!
I'm getting some results by removing that and teatimer. While you write it's cleaned up, tell us about how you refreshed the CPU heat sink compound, checked the fans and ran as a test with the cover off.
When I replaced the heat sink fan, it already had paste in it. Also, I have a program, thru ASUS, that monitors my fan & cpu temp. & speed. Everything seems OK with those. I clear my temp. internet files, defrag my H.D., clean disk of unwanted junk files and run all of the antivirus and antispyware that U can imagine! I am beginning to think, that it has something to do with the power box fan! Because, when I turn off my computer and restart it, the power fan makes a buzzing noise coming on and it freezes up about 4 to 5 times before it even loads up! But, when I reset it about 4 to 5 times, the fan then settles down and quits making that buzzing noise. Then, it only freezes up 2 to 3 times a session. Could it be the power box purhaps?
Here's why. If we look at the paste it could have bubbles or not had enough to do the job. For the ONE DOLLAR of compound I think it best to wipe off the compound and put the dollar of compound back on.
Besides it could have air bubbles, etc. BUT THAT IS NOT WORTH FIXING YET!!!
"the power fan makes a buzzing noise coming on and it freezes up about 4 to 5 times before it even loads up!"
That's the classic sign of BAD CAPS. Google BAD CAPS for pictures of what to look for.

The bad caps is an interesting theory, of why my computer is freezing up! I am going to look into this further! I have already checked on a bad caps site, called badcaps.net and will see if this site can help me out. As far as the cpu paste, I should have explained a little bit better. The heat sink fan that I had purchased, had a heat sink paste piece, already pre-installed on the back of the cpu fan. The guy that built my computer, runs a computer shop and advised me, that the new heat sink fans, already come with a pre-installed paste. I will probably have to have him check out my computer and see what he can do to figure out. Thanks for all of your assistance though!
