Canon A470 Can't download pictures HELP

by lianasb52 - 7/10/09 2:45 AM

I bought a Canon A470 a few weeks ago to replace my little cheap camera. All I had to do with that was connect it to a usb cable and a windows photo wizard came up and transferred them to the Pc.I am using Windows XP,and never downloaded the software disc with the old camera. However,it said on the instructions with the Canon that software had to be downloaded,so I did that. I have only taken 20 snaps and tried using the usb cable but keep getting a message to say "camera not detected" or "Check connection to camera". I uninstalled the software and tried again but the Wizard doesnt come up. I put the SD card in my printer and it said Found 20 pics but only 1 was showing. The rest all had a big red X.My daughter has the same camera, hasn't downloaded any software discs, and operates Windows Vista Premium. I took the camera over to her and she put the SD card in her printer, and all the pics came up no bother. Can anyone tell me what is going wrong here? I thought maybe the usb cable was faulty and not connecting to the PC,but why would the SD card be the same and only show 1 picture when I try to use it ,but show them all on my daughter's PC? Hope it won't be too technical to resolve as I am not that good at the computer. thanks

It will likely take a while to find out exactly what went wrong.
Use your daughter's computer to copy the photo files to a USB Thumb Drive or burn them to a CD.

After you have a copy of the photos, use your CAMERA to format the memory card.
You likely did not do that before you started using the card.
The Format will delete all the photos on the card and write a clean Canon File Information Block )FIB).

For the future ... download your photos the easy way:

Buy a SD card reader
If you had a SDHC card, buy a SDHC card reader.

Just put the memory card in the card reader and the computer will see it as being a disk drive.
You can download the photos and put them where you want them, by using My Computer or Windows Explorer.

I don't know what went wrong but I think I will uninstall the software and start again . I will get my daughter to send me through the pics from her Pc and will find the programme on the camera that you recommended. I replaced the original memory card which didnt have much space and replaced it with a San Disk 1.0 GB SD card. I was looking at card readers in Argos,so I might get one as they are selling for £10.Thanks for your help, Jean

The SD card in my camera was a used one that my daughter gave me,so don't know if maybe it was the cause. I will go the whole hog and buy a new card as well as the card reader. The pictures are brilliant by the way, from what I saw when my daughter got them on screen,so hopefully I will be up and running soon.
Thanks,
Jean

If the card had previously been used in something else, you should have formatted it with the camera before taking any photos.
Failure to do so, can cause some strange things.

Look in the very back of the camera User Manual and you should find a complete index.
Look for the word "Format".

If you have two User Manuals, it will probably be in the Advanced manual.

After you get your card reader installed,
you can take the old card and put it in the card reader and delete every files and folders you find.
Then put it in the camera and format it with the camera and it should be good to go.

Thanks for your help I will get my pictures safely in to my PC and then re-formatt the card.
But I am still puzzled as to how a little cheap camera downloaded pics no problem, and with no software disc downloaded, simply by attaching the usb to the camera, and following the instructions on the windows Wizard, and this much better quality camera is causing all these hitches.Never mind,I will get a card reader and enjoy the clearer pictures from the Canon.
Thanks,
Jean
