Here's the deal:
In 2005, the hard drive on my Dell 8250 either stopped working, or had too many viruses to run properly. I got a newer hard drive, larger capacity, etc, and installed XP again. Both the old hard drive and the new one are technically still connected in my tower (obviously the new one is the only one in use). The only thing I do want off the old drive is pictures. Everything else is fine and I backed up what I needed to. Every time I click on the drive from My Computer, it wants me to format it (obviously not the solution to retrieving old pictures). I'm certain the hard drive still works, if poorly. Is there any way to go in to the virus-ridden HD and get some, if not all, of the pictures back? I'm lost with hardware issues like this!
The experts here often suggest connecting a failed hard drive as a slave inside the case and then attempting to extract any files needed off the drive, and that seems to be what you have tried.
But if Windows cannot "Explore" that drive in My Computer, then that doesn't sound too good.
You may want to try some recovery software, eg SnapFiles.com has a list of recovery utilities and I see one there called DiskDigger which may help;

But I would wait until others here contribute. They may have better ideas.
