by smit9192 - 7/11/09 11:13 AM

Hi guys,
i want to buy a nice camera for my trip and i am deciding between Canon SD1200 and Canon SD780... i am gonna take a lot of pictures on my trip.. and i am concerned with both daytime and nightime pictures.. and price is not an issue..any help in deciding between these two cameras will be appreciated.. i was going to buy the sd780 right away largely because it has 12mp and HD video mode, but my friend said sd1200 takes sharper pictures..hence i am really stuck..thanks in advance

You should be pleased with either camera.

There are few differences between the two.

Here are two one-page conclusions of a test of the two:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2009_reviews/canon_sd780_conclusion.html

Here is a comparison of features:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_sd780is%2Ccanon_sd1200is&show=all

Each of the first two pages have a link to sample photos at the end of the page.
You can judge for yourself how sharp the images are.

......

One note about HD video:
If you want to connect the camera directly to a HD television set, you will need to buy a special Canon HDMI cable ($70).
The cable does not come with the camera.

In fact all digital cameras with HD video will need a special cable to connect to a HD TV.
The prices ranges between $50 and $99, depending upon the manufacturer.

: Canon SD1200 or Canon SD780 ?

My thoughts are that the camera is just ok at best. the size and design are fantastic, but the Sd780 does not shoot in super fine mode. most of the shots that i have taken are a bit grainy no matter the lighting. In fact, my biggest complaint is that the SD780 is a difficult point and shoot. colors are off lighting is off, and for a 12 mp camera you would expect the depth to be much more impressive. I found that I spent more time tweaking with the settings then shooting. I would score the shooting at 5 out of 10 at best.

As for the HD video feature! Now this is a great feature, the video quality from a point and shoot is fantastic! BUT!!!! The camera software only allows viewing in quicktime. ***!!! So forget small thumbnail shots of your movies on a PC. Not to mention you can't use window's move maker with the .Mov files. Save your money for now and see what canon comes up with next!
