Maybe so; maybe not! One big problem

by Cadillac84 - 6/27/09 8:23 AM In reply to: What's your opinion on Internet Explorer 8? by mopscare42

Maybe someone knows how to cure this. I can easily get back to IE6, so it is not critical, but . . . .

I have several Gmail identities which I use for different purposes. I like to keep them all running all the time. Under IE6, that was a simple matter. Open IE window, log in to Gmail acct #1. Open another IE window being careful to use Quick Launch, Desktop icon, or Start Menu. This is important! It must be a separate "instance" of IE. In the 2nd instance of IE, log in to Gmail acct #2. Open a third instance of IE and log in to Gmail acct #3. Now, each IE window is unique and I can send/recv emails from each. If I spawn a window from within one of the Gmail messages, that window will belong forever to the instance that opened it. Etc. Pretty easy to manage once you understand it.

I resisted IE7 and finally decided to try IE8 a couple weeks ago. Lucky for me, I cloned my drive and installed IE8 on the clone. Now, if I want to go back, all I have to do is re-clone my old drive to the new drive and I'll be back to square one. Here's why I might do that:

Under IE8, the rules have changed! The cookie from Gmail in the first instance of IE8 is read by the second instance of IE8 and when I call up Gmail in the second window (window, not tab!), my Gmail account is displayed already logged in even though I never, ever, ever use "remember me."

Now, when I open the second instance of IE8, I can select "Private Browsing" so the cookie is not shared with the first instance. That works great as far as it goes. Ctrl+Shft+P give me a private browsing session and I can log in to Gmail acct #2.

However, that is as far as it goes! If I open a third instance of IE8, and use Ctrl+Shft+P to enter private browsing, the cookie from the other private browsing session is used and I am taken to my Gmail acct #2. If I do not use private browsing, I am taken to my Gmail acct #1. The only way I can get to Gmail acct #3 while accts #1 and #2 are open is to use FireFox or another browser for the third account.

Does anyone know how to defeat this? If not, I think I'll go back to IE6 and hope that I die before I am forced to stop using it. (which could happen!)

Thanks in advance to anyone brave enough to answer!

Chas

Well, I backed out of IE-8; went back to IE-6

by Cadillac84 - 6/27/09 2:57 PM In reply to: Maybe so; maybe not! One big problem by Cadillac84

Life is good!

I have three Gmails open now and I can do without tabs.

If someone has a suggestion, I'll try IE-8 again; getting back to six was easy.

Manage your Add-ons!

by Cadillac84 - 6/28/09 3:25 PM In reply to: not so great by Draigous

IE-8 assumes you don't know your left foot from your right. Therefore, it becomes IE-8's job to change your diapers, wash the dishes, etc. So, step up to the plate and tell it to mind it's own damned business!

Tools, Internet Options and click the "Programs" tab. Now, click the button to "Manage Add-ons" and start disabling. You'll have trouble disabling too many.

Do not disable your anti-virus program and don't disable Java or Adobe. Disable most of the rest of them (you can always change them back if you get one you shouldn't have!).

Manage search and toolbars --- the fewer the better. I mean, do you REALLY need a Google Toolbar? A Yahoo! Toolbar? These toolbars eat up screen real estate (of which I am very, very jealous!) and they eat up clock cycles. Get rid of them!

Sadly, you cannot have "none" as an option for search. I guess Live Search or Google or Yahoo! but don't have more than one. You can always go to Yahoo dot com or Google dot com.

When you get through with the machete, work with the scissors and then the scalpel. At the end, click OK and then close Internet Explorer and then restart it.

Things should be much better!

Same applies to IE-6 or IE-7, but IE-8 is probably more bloated than the earlier ones.

Good luck.

Right on, cadillac man!

I was having problems with IE7. It would load slowly or freeze up. It was generally unstable. I opened TOOLS-> manage add-ons-> enable-or-disable add-ons. Then you can peruse the browser add-ons. I disabled tool bars and stuff like that. After I carefully disabled add-ons I did not want then I tried out the browser. If you disabled some feature or program you really want to use then just go back and enable it. Now that I have basically "cut out the fat" my browser works much better and faster. So the bottom line is only have the least number of add-ons running that you can get away with to upgrade the efficiency of whatever IE you are using.

IE 8

by AspieMum - 7/11/09 8:53 AM In reply to: What's your opinion on Internet Explorer 8? by mopscare42

Apart from websites that don't like IE7 but like IE 8 it seems to work just the same as IE 7. I haven't looked at the CPU/memory use which I saw a message some where else in the forums at least one person had an issue with. I have to have IE 8 to contact my son's teachers as that bit of the school's website won't work with anything else (even when IE8 was still beta).

One thing to remember

by bearmountainscientific - 7/11/09 10:12 AM In reply to: What's your opinion on Internet Explorer 8? by mopscare42

If you are going to download and install IE 8, make sure that you DO NOT have a Google Toolbar installed. Then after IE 8 is installed, and you have rebooted, you can download the latest version of the toolbar, Version 6, not earlier, and install. This will prevent most of the problems with the IE 8 installation from messing up your computer.

Jump back, Miss Agnes! (multiple sessions!)

by Cadillac84 - 7/14/09 10:35 AM In reply to: What's your opinion on Internet Explorer 8? by mopscare42

Well, I discovered by accident this morning that you can indeed have more than one "UID" under IE-8.

I have reported that I use several Gmail accounts and like to keep three or four of them open most of the time, something easily done under IE-6.

Under IE-8, if you open a new "instance" of IE, the cookie generated when you logged in to your email account persists and carries to the new session.

Well, instead of clicking the IE icon in the "quick launch" -- instead of using "Start, IE" try this:

In your current IE-8 session, click File and select "New Session" -- no shortcut.

Your new window will open and you can go to Gmail (or wherever) and sign in to a new UID account.

Maybe this won't be so bad after all!

Since IE-8 is pretty easy to install and also easy to remove, you may want to install it (again?) and give the File, New Session a try!

My apologies to Microsoft, of course!

Try tuning for low-fat

by Cadillac84 - 7/24/09 4:27 PM In reply to: internet explorer by johnlira

Check previous messages (most on previous page) about toolbars and managing add-ons. After a bumpy start, I'm doing well with IE-8 and you can also.

Before upgrading to IE-8, get rid of all toolbars. You don't need ANY of them and you never did! Can you pronounce "a d v e r t i s i n g"?

Now install IE-8, manage add-ons to as few as you can. Don't disable Java, Flash or your antivirus. But try to live without the rest. You'll have to have one Search "tool" which is one more than I want. Choose wisely and life will be good!

If IE-8 is still slow, you haven't managed add-ons and need to be more Draconian.

I'm not a MS fanboy, so I hate to say this: IE-8 is a good browser.

STOP DONT DELETE IE8 YET!!!!!ie8 explorer problems

by johnlira - 7/24/09 11:58 PM In reply to: Try tuning for low-fat by Cadillac84

Chuck has the right Idea. Ihave been trying to uninstall but I had a warning that ALL MY WINDOWS XP UPDATES, my security updates add ons, and plugins and patches will be afected and the computer will not be working properly if I remove ie8
All the programs and all added installations should be removed before you go back to ie7.

Post 72 of 89

Whoa, Nellie!!! Don't do it THAT way!

by Cadillac84 - 7/25/09 6:14 AM In reply to: STOP DONT DELETE IE8 YET!!!!!ie8 explorer problems by johnlira

Hey, folks! If you want to remove IE-8 do it like this:

Windows XP or Vista:

Control Panel, Add & Remove Programs, (wait for list to populate).

Find IE-8 under the "W" as in "Windows Internet Explorer 8" and click to remove it.

You will remove IE-8 and will automatically restore your previous Internet Explorer version -- in my case, it was IE-6 but makes no difference. Whatever you were using before you installed IE-8 will be back.
==============

There is also a wrong way to do it.
DO NOT DO THIS!

DO NOT use Add or Remove Windows Components! When you go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, there are four side-tabs (if you'll permit me to use that terminology) called: Change or Remove Programs, Add New Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components, Set Program Access and Defaults. (Vista titles may be slightly different, but . . .)

The important thing is you do NOT want to remove the Windows Component! Make certain you are looking at "Change or Remove Programs" and keep in mind that the program we call "Internet Explorer" is known to Microsoft as "Windows Internet Explorer."

That is important because, even though they lost the case, Microsoft contended before Congressional hearings and in court that Windows Internet Explorer was "integral" to Windows. LOL

Well, be that as it may, you want to remove the "program" and NOT the "component."

I'm guessing that if you remove IE-8 and are thus reverted to IE-7, you COULD then remove IE-7 and be reverted to IE-6. I never installed IE-7, so I can't test that theory.

=================
P.S.

The reason for getting rid of your Toolbars before you upgrade to IE-8 is to avoid some reported incompatabilities of older toolbars and IE-8. If you are a Toolbar Junkie, and you've just GOT TO HAVE the Toolbars, install IE-8 without Toolbars and then go get the ones you want.

Remember, the words "Toolbar" and "Advertising" are synonymous, so you'll be able to junk up your screen free of charge! (for whatever reason - LOL)

Desperate i.e.8 problems

by johnlira - 7/25/09 8:40 PM In reply to: STOP DONT DELETE IE8 YET!!!!!ie8 explorer problems by johnlira

Still trying to get rid of i.e. 8 Went to add and remove programs-i.e.8 then remove. At that point I recieved a warning that I had installed various up dates add ons, plug ins and a.v.g. virus protector (full blown version) after I installed i.e.8. Therefore u I was warned by removing i.e.8 it will cause these installs to be re cause a problem to the computer. Im a my last few payments. I hate that when that happens.

What I would do....

by timwerx - 7/25/09 8:56 PM In reply to: Desperate i.e.8 problems by johnlira

1) Just leave IE8 as-is and install a better browser to use instead, like Firefox or Chrome.

2) If you must use an earlier version of IE, disable all the toolbars that you can, then uninstall IE8 under Add/Remove. Even if AVG Free is affected, you can always re-install it.

There are so many good open source freeware options these days that it's unnecessary and silly to suffer with software you don't like.

IE7 & IE8 problems

by caztones - 8/14/09 11:49 AM In reply to: What I would do.... by timwerx

My ActiveSynch would not connect when I was in IE7, then when I upgraded to IE8, ActiveSynch connected, but my Outlook started hanging under my user profile. I could only open in safe mode, but the user profile someone else uses on my system started opening again for some unknown reason. Also, on both users there was a frequent error message about the last session not closing properly when I opened IE8. I uninstalled IE 7 and Outlook works again, but ActiveSynch doesn't. Should I go back to IE6? Should I turn off the Google Bar and try IE8 again? I've seen those solutions for other IE8 problems, but I'm not sure that will fix mine.

Thank you.
