With regards to up-grading or installing any programs on your system, bear this in mind, it is your computer, and it must perform the way YOU want it to.It is your option to grant or deny access to programs of your choice. You must be in full control at all times.
google/search for "sandboxIE". it is a freeware/shareware app.
freeware as in you get a "nag screen" and have to wait 15 seconds before you can use the app. if you like it, BUY IT.
you can run ANY browser, and most (pre-installed) apps in it.
it runs the browser/app in a virtual environment and you can set it (in the paid version) to WIPE/format the "sandbox" every time you close the app.
check it out. i HIGHLY recommend it. i LOVE ie6 and won't change untill i CAN'T view web pages anymore with it. i use firefox 3.0.x IN sandboxIE for the pages that won't render in ie6.
DISCLAIMER: i am not compensated by OR in any way affiliated(?sp?)with the maker/owner of "sandboxIE". i just think it is a GREAT solution to use my favorite browser in a SAFE way.
Start to use a real browser download FIREFOX and forget all about the
explorer issue... exporer 7 and 8 was a bad copy of Firefox.
Try it and you never will be back to explorer... LONG LIVE FIREFOX...
Mary,
Without a doubt you should update your browser but do not believe that IE has any advantage over other browsers in the Windows OS. In fact, it is almost universally regarded as the most dangerous, slow and user unfriendly of all the browsers available to Windows users. Alternatives include Opera,Chrome and of course Firefox. All of them are as tightly coupled to Windows as IE is. After all an operating system's job is mainly to connect your hardware to the net.
Specifically, I suggest you give Firefox 3.5 a shot. Its far and away the best and fastest browser available today. You don't have to delete any IE version to try an alternative browser and almost all will import your current favorites and address book so feel free to comparison shop and pick what feels good to you!
Watch out though! I violated Microsoft Hegemony with this post and you can expect lots of mail saying I am nuts and MS is the best. Been doing this stuff for 20+ years and I've no axe to grind. I'm just speaking truth.

Yes definitely one should upgrade to IE8 as it is faster, better and more secure than the previous versions. Also, IE8 makes web browsing a better experience with the use of Accelerators, one can also recover browsing sessions in case of abrupt closing of the browsing session.
Upgrade to MOZILLA FIREFOX 3 internet browser!
IE8 is full of bugs, it slows to a crawl, it crashes, it freezes up your whole computer to the point you have no option but to turn it off and reboot. For me, it even started making it so I couldn't click buttons or links on pages. I checked out all the help pages, tried the fixes, still had problems.
I finally gave up, and tried out the competition. To my delighted surprise, Mozilla Firefox 3 is very easy to use, and it just plain works. Haven't had a single issue with it at all.
Microsoft released an inferior product on the masses and has been slow to address it's issues which are severe and numerous. Therefore, I declare, they can shove their crappy IE8 right up their @$$.
Hell, they haven't even fixed the XP os! After all the years it's been out, it's still buggy and crash prone. Says a lot about the company.
Nobody should have to go to some tech help page and try to execute some multi-stage semi-complicated process to try and fix software programs that should work properly in the first place.
I did it and I ended having a lot of problems, then I foun out that there were several problem with this release, how microsoft dare to release a "new" version with a lot of problems. Just check the Q&Aq for Explorer 8...
I desinstalled it and reinstall E7, much better...
I think keep it as it is.
thanks.
Explore 8 slow yo Computer down to a near crawl so I Had it on my computer and had to remove it after I installed which took about a 1/2an hour to load. Which should have told me something. So the raal Answer is NO.
Best Regards,
Carl
Personally I wouldn't there are too many fixes and just clutters up your hard drive.
Personally I would switch to a free alternative such as Firefox, which will keep you safer on line and it is leaner and therefore faster to load.
Give it a try at least and make your own decision.
I rather keep both the IE 7&8. It's because IE8 can't save and open next time I use it...
I did this recently after a prompt from microsoft . i am not tech savvy at all and just followed the screen instructions . i must say my comp seems to be slower now and sometimes when i want to exit from a web pages , it freezes . i assume this is something to do with the ( enhanced !?) security features
you should definitely upgrade to 8. always go with the newest version - it has the most security (as well as the coolest new features).
personally, i say give IE the finger and upgrade to firefox, but if it's a choice between IE 7 and 8, go with 8.
As a general user AND developer, I've always favoured Firefox and version 3 gave me all the reason never to try any other browser unless there was a valid reason to do so.
But a few days back, my dual-boot laptop (P4 2.8, 512MB RAM) that runs Windows XP and Ubuntu was doing a live update while I was on Windows.
Although I was reluctant and had always heard of disastrous updates/upgrades, I thought I'll give it a shot. And guess what... I think this upgrade to IE8 was really worth it. Here's what I love about it.
1. I can zoom in and out just like with FireFox.
2. I can 'emulate' IE7 (which I never had, since I jumped in from IE6) with a single click and return to IE8. This is REALLY USEFUL, particularly when troubleshooting sites.
3. It has a SUPERB developer tool that allows me to set/unset properties of the page(s) and study the CSS issues. But I should admit that Firefox is easier in this area.
There are many more nice features and I think the competition is now on between IE and FF.
Happy computing!
Khalid
Call me old school, but I'm holding onto IE6!!!!!!!!!
I hate these bubbly resource hogs that are IE7 or 8
Sure, maybe there's some more security, but they're waaaay too slow, compared to IE6. I don't need flashy bubbly stuff that makes my life so much slower! Even 1 second, per page load makes a big difference if you go through 20 sites at a time.
I think you should just look at what you want out of your browser.
I have FireFox installed too. I use it when necessary. When IE6 doesn't do the job that I want.
My main browser is IE6. I have issues with IE, as well as Firefox. So I use them interchangeably.
No need to upgrade to 7 or 8.
Just like I won't upgrade to Vista. I can't stand using Vista!
They took the simple stuff and made it so hard to use.
I would even appreciate a comeback of DOS.
There were so many options. When the real DOS disappeared, everyone was mad. Most people don't know what DOS was good for.
I have learned to live without DOS, but I don't see myself living without XP nor IE6.
I tried IE7 back in the day and it kept crashing every 5-15 minutes, and I said SCREW THIS and all these updates. I also upgraded Firefox a while back, to a newer version at the time, and that caused problems.
I had no major issues with what I had, and lived a stress free life when it came to computers. Then I decided it was time to update, and it didn't go too well. So I'm back to what works.
Hope this helps in any way.
PS: that site that is trying to get rid of IE6 because it causes extra work for developers is based on laziness. Those people should be ashamed of themselves. What do they do for MACs and all the other OSes? Most of the time web design is overpriced anyway. If you are making over $500, you better be making the code compatible with IE6 and all the other programs.![]()
