Creating a Website
by ceme773 - 3/21/08 7:16 PMI work for a very small company and we have been throwing around the idea of having a website. Could someone please tell me where we should start. I am fairly computer literate. Could we create a website by ourselves? Is one software program better than the other?I would be so grateful for any information the Cnet community can give us to start in the right direction.

I had two consults a few years ago (actually more but let's say I had two.) One of them just went with go daddy and they were live in 7 days replete with credit card processing and more. The second didn't take the advice and 3 years later is still working with other consultants to write their web site.
There is no perfect tool here but there is an issue that we can get it going in no time at all or spend our efforts building web pages and learning tools or html.
Which way are you going with this?

Since we are a small company we are trying to get a website for the least amount of money. What does it cost for a consult. Are you talking around $500.00 or $2000.00. Is there software we can buy that would walk us thru the procedure. Would we be able to follow it by ourselves. I have so many questions and I am trying to find the best place to start.

Spent less than 100 bucks to get it online. The second person is still paying web builders and is in the 20K region and still putting more money into it. Did you look at godaddy?
The first person figured out they didn't want to run a website. They wanted to run their business.

Be sure to take a look at what they offer to make sure they have it. In the case of the examples both were wanting to put "product" on a web page and accept credit card payments, etc. I shared their story as an example of where there might be an easy out.

i had a bad experience with godaddy. maybe it was an isolates experience but i won't refer anybody to them.
1&1 is pretty good also. if i had to chose i would say yahoo with factors of ease of use, cost and downtime.

Basics to Creating a New Website

1. Register the domain name. I would recommend a .com extension if you can get one. There are many domain registrars you can use for a new name. You can also research previously registered names for sale at www.sedo.com.
2. Set up a web hosting account. There are many companies that offer accounts. Two that have a bit more service / support are:
www.hostway.com
www.HostMySite.com
3. Design and upload the site. I would suggest that if all you want to do as a beignner is write about and promote a product or service, use the Wordpress blog platform. It is drop dead easy to use and set up (you will still need a web hosting account for all the cool features).

Web Hosting Companies?

My needs are modest - the ability to build a good looking basic website, where I can include samples images of my maps (I'm a consultant specialising in GIS/Cartography), as well as a secure/private on-line filefolder or ftp site where I can share fairly large datasets with my clients(up to 2 GB worth of data), and an email account (that can be matched to my domain/website URL).
I have had a domain/webhosting/email/online filefolder account with GoDaddy for the past 2 years. And while the domain, website and on line file folder features have been good (good value/good uptime/good customer service), their email is hopeless.
I have repeatedly had my outgoing emails disappear into the ether as well as having incoming email disappear - with no bounceback. Apparently, based on online blogs, this is not a new problem but ongoing for many years with GoDaddy, but they refuse to acknowledge it. When I contacted their technical help they told me to send them a bounceback message/email. When I explained that there is none, they simply refused to believe that it was happening.
So I'm searching for a better web hosting company - but discovering that all the web hosting review sites are bogus, and when I google various web hosting possiblities, everyone has horror stories to tell about their web hosting company. Really are there no decent companies out there - that provide reliable service?

It has a great site builder and the domains are only $14.95 a month. No setup fees and pay by monthly member services like: no adds, tracking clicks, visitors, and lots of other great stuff. Plus anyone can make mul;tiple websites. I suggest this host the best.
