Internet in the boonies

by dand63987 - 7/5/09 8:28 AM

Hi guys. I am trying to get high speed internet with a directional antenna through a cell tower. The tower is approx 10 miles away and I was considering a yagi antenna. The tower's cell phone signal is broadcast at either 928.593 MHz or 952.593 MHz which limits my antenna selection. I was wondering what is the best antenna to buy and if this is the right way to go. I only found four on Ebay in that MHz range. I have a 50' tower to install it on. Right now I have satellite internet but it's not "real-time" so I can't use internet telephone and it's quite expensive for only 1.5 meg service. Thanks very much for your help. I am really a newbie at this. Dan

I would think a dish would have higher gain when you have a point to aim at.

Thanks for the reply eagleye007. My dish is not "real time". It points to a satellite in the sky. I want to point to a cell tower for real time internet. Also, I'm paying $89.95 for 1.5 meg speed. With an air card through ATT I'll get twice the speed for half the price. I'm pretty sure a directional antenna pointed at the cell tower will do the trick. I see these antennas advertised,802.11, 800, 1900, 2.4GHz, and I'm confused. The cell tower I'm trying to point at states their frequency is transmitted at either 928.953 or 952.953. Thanks for any help you guys can give me. Also, if anyone else has a possible remedy, I'd appreciate it.

My only point was that dishes are more sensitive for communicating between two fixed points than other types of antenna. That's what what cell towers use to communicate with each other. You'll have to check the specs to see if they are suitable to your application.

Here's a link about a persons adaption of a sat dish for cell phone use:

Frequencies

If you are going to use a router, not an air card, you would likely go 802.11b/g/n The frequencies you mentioned are used for cell phone signal. The suggestion of SATELLITE dish, is probably the most logical in a boonie weed situation. You will likely wind up with some fees from a server just like your air card.
