I Recently started having trouble with my monitor, so now I need a new one. Here's the thing. I have a prehistoric PC, so should I upgrade my monitor to a super awesome monitor now and add ram and a better video card, and wait about a year to get a decent PC, or should I get a mediocre PC and monitor now which I would probably keep for more than a year? Here are my two options...
An eMachines ET1161-05 Desktop with 18.5" Widescreen LCD Monitor that includes AMD Athlon™ single-core processor LE-1620, 2GB DDR2 memory, double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with Labelflash support, 160GB hard drive, NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE graphics, 15-in-1 media reader and Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1. The monitor has these specs http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmprd112700050011&skuId=9999112600050011&type=product&childSku=9075957&count=2
& the other PC...
AMD Sempron 3000+ processor, 1.5GB DDR memory, regular cd burner, 70GB hard drive, BFG GeForce 7300 GT (AGP 8x, 512MB) graphics, Windows XP Vienna, & a HP 2159M 21.5-Inch HD LCD Monitor with these specs http://www.amazon.com/HP-2159M-21-5-Inch-LCD-Monitor/dp/tech-dat
I mostly use the PC to surf the web, watch movies (on the monitor because my t.v. is old) and I might do some light gaming. What do you think?
The eMachines: A mediocre PC with a rather normal monitor.
The other: A much too old PC with a nice big monitor.
What's your current PC and why would you want to update the RAM and the video card?
What are the prices of everything you consider?
Apart from the monitor, do you have a good reason to upgrade the PC or buy a new one?

My current PC was actually a PC built for me by a friend of mine. The reason why I'd like to update my ram and video card is because my current video card (ati radeon 7000 64mb) does not have a dvi output, and I heard that monitors look much better with the use of a dvi. So since I am considering getting a new video card because of this as well as hoping that it will generally make my PC experience better for the time being, I figure it'd also be a good idea to add 1gb of ram as well. The eMachines combo is around $300. The monitor that I really like is about $200 + a $55 video card + $30 worth of ram, so about $300 for all this as well. Apart from the monitor, I have been doing ok with my current pc, though I've always looked forward to the day when I'd be able to get something better. I would actually like to go with the super better monitor option, but would the eMachines option be a better, more enjoyable experience for me?
go to Dell.com and buy one of there bargain machines they start at around 415.00 and there parts should be on the new spec's. computer monitor and keyboard and mouse all come with the machine. you may want to upgrade the on board graphics card or not. graphics on them work well for watching movies and such.
but my budget right now is only about $300 tops =( I think I would be able to afford a really good PC by sometime next year though, hopefully ![]()
are your plans next year a whole brand new system?. or are your plans to barebones a sytem then ad things like drives, memory and such?. I am asking this because if you go get a monitor now you will end up with two when you buy your new machine?.you can get a great monitor for under 300 dollars if you shop on line. bought two samsungs for 235 dollars each.syncmaster 2220wm and i am still very impressed with this monitor. and it is 22 in. i just purchased a Dell top of the line and the samsung was better than the one that came with the dell so we gave the new dell to our son for his machine. check out new egg for a new monitor if that is the route you are going to go.
If I were to get the eMachines now, and end up with enough money next year for a better everything, then I would try and sell the eMachines monitor on ebay. I would much rather get the super monitor instead, but considering my current PC specs, will I really be able to enjoy its features even if I do upgrade my video card and ram? If not then I'd probably end up getting the eMachines. That's what I'm wondering right now since it'll probably take me about a year give or take before I can make another significant upgrade.
Will I be able to experience great video quality with the new monitor, video card, & ram considering the specs on my current PC, or would it not be that great because of those specs, meaning that I'd probably benefit more from the slightly more powerful eMachines combo? Thanks you guys for your replies. ![]()
