System will not accept redefining port 25

by ITsince67 - 7/5/09 4:26 PM

I am running Windows XP/SP3, Outlook Express 2000 on a Sony Vaio (P4, 2.8Ghz, 1GB RAM). Motorola cable modem. I have the McAfee Internet security software, which is provided by Comcast, and use its firewall. I do a full virus scan each week. Auto-update of software. No HW/SW problems before Comcast disable port 25. No configuration change in months. Retired 3 years ago as a computer security engineer.

Got a email on July 4th stating Comcast had detected suspicious activity from my email account - so Comcast disabled port 25. Comcast gave me no warning, they just made this change. I was instructed to define port 587 for sending / receiving emails.

I went into Outlook Express/Tools and redefine the port from 25 to 587. Then clicked on either APPLY or “APPLY and then DONE”. Restarted Outlook and sent myself a email – I got an error message that port 25 is disabled. I checked Tools again, and the “587” had been replaced by “25”. Tried this 3 times. Did it again but then restarted the computer before sending another test email. Got the same error message.

Comcast now wants "full access to my computer - to fix my problem".

I did not have any problems BEFORE Comcast touched things so I do not think I should trust them.

Any suggestions?

McAfee and other software has been known to autofix the ports like that. Since Avast, Free AVG are free why not move to something that doesn't do that?

You've been a BIGGER help than 3 hours of Comcast's "support". And they supply McAfee to their customers.

A tiny bit more.

When you use those other titles be careful about the email filter options as the antivirus does have to fetch the email, send the email, etc.

For example, mcafee MIGHT (notice might?) have it's email service on port 25 which is highjacked (which it must do to filter email) and you are not talking to the email server but the mcafee email antivirus filter/server and mcafee talks to the email server. you get the idea.

So when we change ports it might not be done normally.
