Upgrade:
-> Home Premium: $119.99
-> Professional: $199.99
-> Ultimate: $219.99

Full Retail:
-> Home Premium: $199.99
-> Professional: $299.99
-> Ultimate: $319.99

NOTE: That means Windows 7 Home Premium will cost $40 less at launch than Windows Vista did while Windows 7 Ultimate will cost $40 less to upgrade and $80 less to buy outright!

Ultimate may not be as widely available as Professional, but it is starting to look like a no-brainer given the mere $20 price difference.

WINDOS 7 Home Premium Or WINDOWS 7 Professional

by Mandalji - 6/27/09 7:31 AM In reply to: Note: Forum Sticky Updated... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I do not know the difference between the two. On old Desktop I am using Windos 2000XP and on new SONY VAIO 2009 Model Desktop which I received as gift in June 2009 which came with Windows Vista. My friend helped me to load it with Windows 3000XP. I do not like Windos Vista. I cannot operate the new computer with ease as I operate the old Desktop. What I should do. Will I lose my two years maitainance
protection insurance with Sony if I make changes by deleting Windows Vista substituting it with one of the Windows in the subject field. I do not know how to ask the question. I am not very knowlegeable about computers and their language.

Please help and advise.

1.) As I mentioned in the post you're replying to, the differences between the Windows 7 editions are noted in the "Windows 7 Information" forum sticky.

2.) There is no operating system called Windows 3000XP. Do you mean Windows XP?

3.) You will NOT lose your warranty/protection insurance with Sony by changing the operating system. However, they may not offer drivers for all of your hardware components and may not offer technical support for Windows 7-related issues at first.

WINDOWS

by Mandalji - 6/27/09 1:02 PM In reply to: Notes... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I mean Windoes XP version 3000. Does it make sense to you. How do get the drivers when I switch. Will need the drivers. Is windows seven easier than the Windows Vista. If easier than Vista, when the full version of Windows 7 will be available. You are offering two prices $ 49.99 for home premium and $ 99.99 for Professial. Which of these will be more helpful. I use lot of Word and My Documents for storage of articles and stories I write and collect.

Please keep my inquiries private. Thank you.

1.) There is no "version 3000" of Windows XP, but there is SP3 (Service Pack 3).

2.) You have to check with your computer manufacture and the manufacturers of each hardware component to see if drivers are available.

3.) Yes, Windows 7 is, in many ways, easier to use than Windows Vista.

4.) Windows 7 will be available October 22, 2009, though you can start pre-ordering now.

5.) For your purposes, Home Premium should be sufficient.

6.) Note that the prices you listed are for a limited time only!

Hope this helps,
John

Windows 7 Upgrade

by punky518 - 7/4/09 1:13 AM In reply to: WINDOS 7 Home Premium Or WINDOWS 7 Professional by Mandalji

Upgrading to Win 7 from Vista or XP is a no-brainer either way, however it is odd that Microsoft is only discounting Home Premium and Professional versions until 07/11/09. The ONLY thing you gain in the Ultimate version is multi-language (30+ or so I believe) support and the BitLocker drive encryption, which is offered by most companies anyway with their backup software. My advise to you is simply to purchase the Pro version before 07/11 at the discount from one of the vendors mentioned, unless you have a specific need for those two features. I cannot for the life of me see ANYONE paying $320.00+ for Ultimate at retail when it releases on 10/22/09. Hope this helps...

There are more benefits than that...

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 7/4/09 6:24 AM In reply to: Windows 7 Upgrade by punky518

Those are the top two highlighted on the Windows 7 comparison chart from Microsoft, but there are several others that would be appreciated by power users, including:

-> Supports Multilingual User Interface (MUI) packages.
-> Features Bitlocker (provides full hard drive encryption).
-> Features DirectAccess (provides corporate network access).
-> Features BranchCache (decreases network access time).
-> Features AppLocker (prevents running of unauthorized programs).
-> Offers ability to boot from virtual hard drives (VHD files only).

I agree that Ultimate should have been discounted as well to prevent alienating those who spent extra money previously and would be willing to do so again, but there are still many reasons to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate, something I, and others, will be doing upon its release.

Very good rundown

by RonS [WINDOWS-TEAM] Windows Outreach Team - 6/25/09 9:58 AM In reply to: Check out the forum sticky... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

There will be a comparison matrix up shortly on the Windows 7 site that will compare the major features of each version.

I'll drop a link here when that goes live.

NO Upgrade Option Scheme in Europe!!

by Mike7p - 6/25/09 11:22 AM In reply to: Windows 7 Pricing Announced by RonS [WINDOWS-TEAM] Windows Outreach Team

Microsoft have announced today that the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Scheme that starts tomorrow, will not be available to European (Including UK)customers,therefore not allowing us the chance of a free upgrade on any PC we buy before Oct 22. Which I'm pretty annoyed about as I want to buy a new Notebook next month.
If we were to buy one from a supplier in the USA ( I have friends there who would purchase and ship to me) would I then qualify for the upgrade for the upgrade in Oct?
Regards
Mike7P

Perhaps....

by John.Wilkinson Moderator - 6/25/09 11:27 AM In reply to: NO Upgrade Option Scheme in Europe!! by Mike7p

I advise asking the US-based supplier once the program starts to ensure that is the case; the fine print is not readily available at this time.

Obviously MS is trying to help prop up their loyal

by Steven Haninger - 6/25/09 1:17 PM In reply to: Windows 7 Pricing Announced by RonS [WINDOWS-TEAM] Windows Outreach Team

VAR network and other system builders who must be feeling the pinch of business loses due to a poorer economic climate, a less that wonderfully popular OS in the pipeline, and a newer (and hopefully better) offering just around the corner. I would hope the announcement includes discounted advance purchase pricing for full retail versions as well as upgrade versions in that I'm still hanging on to XP and upgrades for it ain't gonna happen.
