I just had verizon fios installed and now i would like to connect all of my computers to the only printer in the house. The printer is currently connected to an xp computer and the other computers are vista ( one 32bit and one 64bit ). any help would be greatly appreciated. The printer is an HP officejet 6110.
You'd not have the device connected to a PC but have it on your local network. Otherwise you set up sharing from the "host" PC, load the appropriate drivers on the other PCs and point them to the shared printer. This method can get complicated and has it's down sides....including the need to have the host PC on for any other PC to be able to use it. Network printing doesn't require that. You'd have to select a proper print server to attach to the printer. This would be much easier if it was not a multi-function device. Those get ornery enough when run from one PC and can be a real headache when run on a network if the software isn't great.
I read Steve's post and he has a point, a print server MIGHT work but the issue is the differences in the operating systems, that could create an issue. Assuming you have the print unit hooked up to a router, go in to the computers, set up printer sharing, name each unit (computer) and see what happens. Hopefully the printer has a network card built in (ethernet) that would be the desired hook up
