Substitute for Avantgo for Palm Life Drive

by lmbutler - 6/9/09 8:21 AM

Sybase is discontinuing AvantGo Moblile Internet service for mobile devices as of June 30, 2009. I nned some suggestions for a substitute for AvantGo to be able to download or sync my Palm Life Drive to obtain web content such as news, weather, etc. for my device after June 30. Does anyone know of any free or for pay services that will work with the Palm Life Drive. Thanks in advance for any advice anyone may have concerning this.

I've alerted our forum host to edit that out.

-> For now iSilo while not the same and not as easy is viable for 20 bucks. Use a search engine about iSilo.

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked out iSilo, but it is not exactly what I am looking for. I would like to be able to download web sites with current news and weather if possible. Thanks again.

Have you tried MobiPocket?

hi there, i just noticed today that i won't be able to use Avantgo from the end of June '09. Have you tried using MobiPocket ebook reader yet? I know it works on my Palm PDA (Zire 72) but not sure about your LifeDrive. Give it a go, it's free too.

You can read books on it and also news stuff too from most of the ones that are on AvantGo. There also seems to be more formatting options.

That's the problem.

There may not be an exact match. As an author of some Palm OS applications this is the last year I'll be writing a new application unless the pay is there (in advance no less.) It has been a great 10+ years of coding and more but the message is quite clear on this era.

The 3 next platforms appear to be iPhone/iTouch, Windows Mobile and the G phone.

I've made the leap to WinMo and have demonstrated my applications there. This may be another 10 years of fun.

I can address why no WebOS.

Our main application connects vis Blutooth SPP and Palm didn't address this yet. So no-go there. I looked into the g-phone and no SPP when I looked last. This left us with RIM and WinMo. RIM has too many models and a disjointed developer program. The Apple is single source so it didn't get off the starting blocks in the review.

Avantgo replacement

by D Hollatz - 7/3/09 2:54 PM In reply to: Substitute for Avantgo for Palm Life Drive by lmbutler

After Avantgo stopped, I tried the Plucker free program and found it is similar but seems to take quite a bit more time to update the channels. I think the main problem is the program is "spidering" a web site and directories whereas Advantgo was directed to a certain mobile directory. Briefly, if you know the mobile directory a website has, then you will be satisfied with the Plucker program. It sounded more complicated to instal thean it actually is.
