Virus in Recycler directory

by Frizzel - 6/28/09 9:25 PM

Avast found a virus in my J:recycler directory and avast cannot move or delete it(The operation is not supported for this type of archive) and I can't find the directory. Any ideas on what I should do? It's starting to mess with my PC graphics. Should I do a clean install? Thanks in advance.

- What device is J: ?
- Recycler is the recycle bin. It only shows if you set Control Panel>Folder options to show hidden and system files and folders.

try emptying your recycle bin. then rescan with avast. with the designation J:, it appears you have a partition or another drive named J:.

what is your operating system? xp, vista?

I was a bit

sorry i was a bit vague on my first post. I am using Win XP home. The J directory is a second hard drive(storage mostly). As far as the graphics problem goes, I think it may just be my monitor calling it quits. The past couple of weeks it has been turning off by itself, while the tower is still running, and it is a pretty old monitor.

I had done the Control Panel/show hidden files and folders after it first happened and I can't find that Recycler directory.

Recycler folder is invisible to user

by Guillaume8507 - 6/30/09 5:55 AM In reply to: Virus in Recycler directory by Frizzel

I also have found viruses in my Recycler folder. But they were found by PrevX, and Avast couldn't find them. Normally Recycler is invisible to the user.
I used "HijackThis" to see the virus files and delete them. But be careful, it is all too easy to end up deleting the whole disc.

Eset NOD32 took care of it

I used Eset NOD32 and it took care of it. Avast Pro Ed was able to find the virus but not quarantine or delete it or anything. I still may do a full restore, because I've had the virus for sometime and not sure how much damage it did. It was hindering my graphics and shutting down my PC regularly.

just do...

just boot your pc in safe mode, enter the Administrator user... then allow your windows explorer to show up your hidden folders, and you should find Recycler folder... sometimes it is in (Drive)\Documents and settings\(your user name)\... then you just delete the file... and after you reboot again it should be done...
