I'm planning to buy a new laptop. Please help me choose between the two.
M4400
Windows Vista® Business 64-BIT SP1 (Can be upgraded to Windows 7)
Intel® Core™ 2 Quad QX9300 (2.53GHz, 12M L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB) OR
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9800 (2.93GHz, 6M L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M, 512MB
4.0GB, DDR2-800 SDRAM
15.4” UltraSharp™ WXGA+ (1440x900) LED Display
160GB Hard Drive, 7200RPM with Free Fall Sensor
MBP 15"
2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
I will mainly use this computer on 2D and 3D CAD softwares, like Autocad and Solidworks.
Dell M4400 has NVIDIA Quadro and Intel Quad Core, which has superior performance than MBP.
On the other hand Mac is a lot reliable (stable, virus free, longer battery life) than Windows (from what I've heard. I haven't used mac). If I ever choose MBP, I still have to use boot camp to use the windows native cad software like solidworks.
If it were me, I'd go with the MacBook Pro. A quad core CPU will suck your battery dry in no time, and generate a lot of heat. The MacBook Pro has a bigger hard drive, dual video cards that could theoretically be chained together, and the RAM runs at the CPU FSB speed.
Plus, with the MacBook Pro, you have the option of running OS X or Windows, and Windows apps via Parallels (or similar) or in Windows using Boot Camp. The quality of Apple systems also tends to be top of the heap. Which isn't to say an AppleCare program would be a bad thing to have, because they do break like any system, but you tend to have fewer hardware related issues like with HP/Compaq and Acer/Gateway/eMachines systems.
If the prices are roughly the same, then I would say the MacBook Pro would probably be the better bet. Just remember that just because very few viruses/worms/trojans/rootkits currently exist for OS X so far, doesn't mean that couldn't all change tomorrow. So, you're not exempted from safe online habits just because you happen to be running Mac OS X. Sooner or later, someone will figure out an easy way to exploit Windows, Mac, and Linux systems, and the good times will come to an abrupt end.
If it were me, and the price difference was largely negligible, I'd go with the MacBook Pro, because I like options, and the MacBook Pro gives the largest number of them. I would also think the faster RAM and dual video cards would be more useful to you than a quad core CPU.
