Problems installing Windows Xp Media Center

by Jsalas818 - 6/29/09 7:34 PM

A friend of mine asked me if i can reformat his computer because he couldnt boot up. after the Loading screen the screen went blank and that was it. I try to do a clean reformat and the setup gets stuck when the windows disk is loading. I connected the hard drive to a working computer. reformated and succesfully installed an OS. When i connect to the computer it just restarts and restarts. And when i try to boot from cd it freezes before i can even get to the menu were one can choose repair and/or installation of os.
how can i bypass this?/

"reformat his computer because he couldnt boot up."

Ask this question -> Why would reformatting fix this machine?

Seriously. If there is a fault that stopped it from working, what assurance is there than starting over with a fresh OS install will fix the machine?

There could be any number of machine issues here. Some could be annoyingly TRIVIAL such as something plugged into the USB port.

The reason is.

the reason he chosed to reformat is because the computer wouldnt boot up and a blank screen would pop up after the windows loaidng screen would come up.

That's a reason to try but

Points to an issue that has yet to be resolved. That is, the machine may need repair before windows can be reloaded.

"When i connect to the computer it just restarts and restarts"

This could point to heat, bad ram, bad hard disk or something simple like this (watch the video) -> http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-11319_7-6240575-1.html

I ran Memtest86 and it didnt find any problems with the ram. then i connected the hard drive to another computer and worked perfectly fine. Then I connected the computer with another power supply and i got no successful results. and yea the computer is clean.
thank you. jesus

I'm beginning to wonder about the OS CD.

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 7/1/09 8:04 PM In reply to: OK. by Jsalas818

This sort of trouble is well known if the OS CD is for a Gateway and you have a Dell or similar story. For a test, go get UBUNTU and install that.

"that's not good"

by R. Proffitt Moderator - 7/2/09 7:24 PM In reply to: done. by Jsalas818

There is something amiss with this machine.

The cause is unclear and nothing points at anything specific. If I were to bet I would be looking at motherboard (is the BIOS the latest?) replacement first. Then running with one lone stick of ram.

Ok.I ran the computer with a different bigger power supply and it didnt work. there is no update for the bios. I connected a new dvd rom and i was able to boot it up and install the OS. I installed drives and everything. When i turned it off and then later try to turn it on again it hung on the windows loading screen and then i wasent able to boot up from the cd anymore. i also followed this things. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310760 and still i havent had any luck....
thank you

Remember one thing.

Unplug USB drives, printers and such.

Always try the BIOS defaults. I have this one box that is annoying about the settings in that if you enable both USB keyboard and USB mouse support it hangs. I have to reset the BIOS with the jumper. There are many machines out there with issues like that.

However you have proven there is some bad hardware here.
