I have Vista Home Premium, but I would like to upgrade to Professional to get the Windows XP compatibility.
Is that possible or am I locked to upgrade to the Home premium only?
you can upgrade to the corresponding product line or higher. but you can't upgrade from vista business to win 7 home since that's going to a lower product line.
p.s.: home users that bought into the ultimate silliness will probably be very ticked since they can't take advantage of the pre-order and may be forced to upgrade to win 7 ultimate.
Under Windows Vista, that would have required a clean install since Windows Vista Business was not a direct superset of Home Premium, but Windows 7 solves that 'problem.'
Hope this helps,
John
Come to think of it, I did see a discussion somewhere of how 7 is developed in supersets, I guess with the explicit purpose on their end of avoiding the stupid Vista incompatibilities between editions.
"Can I Upgrade Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional?
Yes. It must be a 'clean install.'
Sorry my Geek level has dropped to 4.0 from 10 when MS DOS was my well loved (or for Xcopy!)OS and a 10 MG Hard Drive was WILD!
I have a dual boot with Windows XP Pro OR Vista Premium Home...in this case--what would constitute a clean install?
Well maybe I only dropped to a Geek rating of 5.0 -I have four(4) 500 Gig drives and my Dual core heats my bedroom in the winter?!
More info from the Windows 7 Team Blog: "We also make it easy for customers to change down the road. So let’s say I purchase Windows 7 Home Premium and want to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional. With Windows Anytime Upgrade I can, as it makes upgrading to another version of Windows 7 much easier now that we have a single image for every SKU. Users will be able to unlock upgraded editions of Windows 7 without original media or additional software as everything they need in order to upgrade will be on their PC already."

Hence if I upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Win7 Home Premium does it mean that later I could upgrade that version to Pro if I wanted to? The article seems to talk about full retail versions and not upgrade version.
Windows Vista to Windows 7 is a 'standard' upgrade, while Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional can be done using the Anytime Upgrade, which you can consider an 'express' upgrade process. However, I would recommend upgrading directly from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional to avoid the second upgrade licensing fee.
Hope this helps,
John
Can you upgrade from Vista Home Premium Edition to Windows 7 Business or do you have to get the full Windows 7 business edition?
This .doc has everything you need to know about Windows 7 Upgrade paths - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E170EBA1-5BAB-401F-BBF5-00F0EE7FE0FB&displaylang=en

I am planning to upgrade from Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit to Windows 7 Professional using an upgrade disc provided at minimum cost to faculty at my University. Can I install Windows Professional directly or do I need to do a clean install?
I know that the whole 32 bit to 64 is okay as it requires a clean install (done that many times). I want to know that can i upgrade my Vista Home Premium (OEM) 32bit to Seven Professional 64 ??
Windows 7 professional 64 bit with a clean install. I did this install last night
Windows 7 Ultimate. It took like 3 hours but all iis working fine. I had one issue there is a sound buttom that is white when sound is on but when I did the upgrade the button stayed orange until HP but the new Windows 7 drivers on there website last week. Now the light is white when I have sound and orange when volume is muted.
