Costco has this model on sale for $1099 (+ $49.99 shipping). I'm close to buying a 46"-47" LCD and it's down to this Samsung or the Vizio SV470XVT. There's plenty on the Web about the Vizio (including CNET's rating of it as the top budget LCD), but I can't find anything about the Samsung (Web or user reviews). Anyone out there have this model? Happy with it? Also: Where in the Samsung line does the LN46B540 fall in terms of features/quality/etc.? I can't tell whether its a budget model or a higher-end model at a good price at Costco. Thanks.
Did you find out anything about this model - I am curious too!
The B540 series is very similar to the B550's. They are 60hz sets, and don't have all of the USB media playback functionality as the 6 and higher sets do. I purchased the service manual for my LN52B550. One interesting note is that some of the 540's are listed as using non-Samsung lcd panels. The LN46B540 is listed as using an AUO panel... while the LN46B550 is listed as using a Samsung Panel. This may change as they do different production runs, but that's whats listed in the parts list.
Thanks for the response. I ended up purchasing the 540 and have found it to be a quality product so far. OTA digital and DVD are gorgeous - haven't upgraded to HD cable yet, though. Any way to tell by visual inspection whether my LCD is Samsung or AUO? Is there some downside to an AUO panel?
So far, I'm very happy with it. As I said, picture looks excellent for DVD and over-the-air digital broadcasts. The black levels seem very good to my eye and the colors generally look true. I'm no audiophile and don't really have anything to compare it to, so I can't say if the sound is any better/worse than other sets. It sounds pretty good to me, though, and the set lets you pick from several pre-adjusted sound modes. You can also fine tune each further with an on-screen equalizer. Frankly, i haven't used the internal speakers that much, since I also bought an inexpensive home theater system.
I will say that part of me wishes I had spent the few extra hundred bucks to get a 120hz or 240hz TV. (About a week after the Samsung arrived I saw a 47" 240hz - yes, 240hz - Vizio in my local Costco warehoue for $1,299. Argh!). The reason I'm having doubts is that the day after the Samsung arrived, I watched a tennis match on a local OTA digital station. Looked great until I started focusing on the ball during serves. There were clear trails behind the ball. I probably noticed them more because I was looking for them, though. And for 95% of the things I watch, this wouldn't be an issue (don't watch a lot of sports with high-speed action). Still, though, I hate being already behind the technology curve a couple weeks after a big purchase. Guess that's always the way it is with electronics, though.
Got my LN46B540 from Costco. It is absolutely gorgeous especially after installing HDTV and an HDMI cable. I highly recommend getting those to maximize your visual experience because it really does make a difference. I noticed it right away...
The "Touch of Color" red streak at the bottom of the screen has a modern look and stunning appeal. I highly suggest this model as I have been looking for a great LCD for a while. After comparing other brands, I knew I wanted a Samsung and so
I took a chance and simply ordered it online without actually seeing it in the store. It's beautiful and I couldn't be happier!
