by wuzup_ - 6/30/09 2:21 PM

when I started up my laptop a couple of days ago, I had only a black screen and cursor. I can somewhat navagate and get on line through the task manager, but thats all. I have vista home premium. It won't let me restore back any further than it started. I had AVG but it even quit working an I had to uninstall it. I ran malwarebytes and it didn't find anything.....help!!!

That's an Explorer.exe problem...

Terminate the process and relaunch it using Task Manager or restart your computer as a quick fix. If the problem persists, post information about any/all recent installations, applications set to launch automatically at startup, et cetera.

Let us know.

I don't have explorer.exe and when I try to launch it from task manager, my start menue almost starts up but explorer exe. will not stay on the processes. I even checked out my registry and its not there either. I downloadeded advanced system care recently and also some new drivers. I uninstalled everything just to see. I also went to a site to download explorer.exe but it won't stay.

Lost Desktop and Icons and Taskbar and soon.....my Mind.

by wuzup_ - 7/9/09 2:51 PM In reply to: That's an Explorer.exe problem... by John.Wilkinson Moderator

I tried to put explorer.exe back in the processes and the cpu jumps up to 100% and the task bar shows up for a second then goes away. I've tried just about every thing including a check for viruses. I have AVG and tried malwarebytes and even vundofix. Any HELP would be appreciated.

try this step

it might be because the shell value the registry is corrputed... that is the reason you are losing the explorer on every restart.

Trey to start the explorer using the task manager and go to the following location in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon\ and in the right side find the shell value and check whether the value is explorer.exe. If not right click on the shell and select modify and changes the value to exporer.exe.

Close the registry and restart the computer.......

I beleive it should work.
