Need freeware that can password protect network access
by Alex_nb185 - 6/29/09 6:26 PMI am looking for some software that will be able to prompt the user for a password everytime they log on to any computer in the house for a password to get on the net. Kinda like they have at hotels, only I need it for my house. Not sure how this would be installed, I guess at the router.
I have fios in my house if that helps...
If you have a suggestion, even if it isn't free, that would help... But I prefer free

do you want prevent them from using the computer completely or just the internet?
which router do you have?
Do you want a turnkey type solution? how much flexibility (e.g.: only from Monday to Friday 8 am - 9 pm) weekend ( 8 am - 10 pm)
I suspect your solution will be free or not depending on whether you like to roll up your sleeves and program your computer/router etc.

I would like to have it on all the time. Like, one computer could be using it, if they have the password, but another not if they didn't, at the same time.
I have fios so they give you an actiontech router... I know I'd never heard of it either.
The users aren't the smartest people on the planet, so consider them basic users.
Need any more info?

If it is, there is parental control but i am not sure whether it has internet blocking if you don't have the right password. you may want to browse in the menu's to see whether there is something of that sort. If it doesn't, you just have to use software to lock down your machines. there is nothing much you can implement at the router level. i am not familiar with access control software so i will let other people in the forum to give you a solution.
