Has anyone been able to get that to work with Blu-ray disk or any other sources, to produce a 5.1 format ? IE, can it be put into a *transparent* mode where it simply "passes" the audio port of *whatever* the input device produces ?
This way, it would be a VERY SIMPLE SINGLE connection to the AV receiver.. whatever u watch on the TV at the time, IS the audio signal also delivered to the receiver. There would be no need to have separate connections from each input device to the receiver itself.
The manual says it can do this ONLY from broadcast channels but not from digital devices. It should be very easy to be able to do what I am asking for. So I wonder if there some "internal" way of doing it ?
Thanx
You CAN go directly from the tv to the receive with optical, and it will produce 5.1 surround. Since it doesn't pass video obviously, you'd need component or HDMI from a dvd player to the tv. HOWEVER,if you bypass the receiver (not running the dvd player through it)your audio from the tv back to the receiver will probably be out of sync. So, if your receiver has no HDMI inputs/outputs, run component from dvd to receiver, receiver to tv, optical back to receiver...that should work.
thank u for your suggestion but that is not what I am asking ![]()
I *AVOID* at all cost to run the video connection thru any A/V receiver
unless it is a very expensive & a very good one since video signals are almost ALWAYS deteriorated. So, in my setup, video signals (all thru HDMI) are always DIRECTLY connected to the tv. But in addition, I have also all the audio connections separately either from coax or optical cable. I want to avoid all those audio connections from multiple sources. I am asking if just ONE connection from the tv audio optical output can carry 5.1 for *ALL* possible inputs to the tv (which are made thru HDMI)....
Thanx

It cannot... Although intuitively, you think it'd be easy - just take the audio over HDMI and pipe it through the OPT OUT to the receiver.

HDMI carries digital signals (bits and bytes), and as long as the AV Receiver does not do any video processing (like upscaling or upconverting, etc), there is no signal degradation over HDMI.
Those AV Receivers that do offer video processing, typically have an option to turn it off.

Thanx for your response. I will investigate whether I can turn off *any* video processing from my receiver. I have a pioneer VSX-1019AH-K
Thanx again
