Latin for "reduction to robots kill us all" (geek humor)

by glistam108 - 6/29/09 6:47 AM

You've likely noticed that on BOL, most news items involving artificial intelligence or robotic innovations frequently devolve somehow into "when the robots take over and kill us all." A funny but also cautionary line of thinking.

I think a prominent pattern like this deserves it's own Latin name. You have likely heard of the term "Reductio ad absurdum" meaning to disprove a proposition by following its implications to a logical but absurd consequence. There is also the 20th century pun of this, "Reductio ad hitlerum" meaning to to invoke hitler or nazism to make a fallacious point.

It has been a few years since I studied Latin, so help me out. My grammar may be way off, but thoughts are:
Reductio ad deletus robotum
Reductio ad mors ab cogitatio machina

If robots do take over

It'll happen in Japan, because they lack a healthy fear of robots.

Here is a possible definition:
"A cautionary school of thought dictating that any innovation in the areas of AI or robotics should be hypothetically followed to a logical consequence wherein the innovation leads to self-awareness of machines followed by them killing us all."
