Dimension 4550 - No Power After Upgrade Attempted.
by badta00 - 6/7/09 7:10 PMI tried to upgrade my video card and when I tried to power back up I got nothing. I returned everything back to normal and still no power. The fans, lights and drives do nothing. I opened the case and plugged it in and I have a green light comes on next to where the power supply plugs into board.

That cards are fully seated and not misaligned. Try to power-ON again after being sure, check results. If no go, maybe you blew or overlooked something. If this Dell model# has the PSU LEDs, check their status and what it means, should be all green.

by badta00 - 6/10/09 8:21 AM In reply to: Big hands by WillyThe "diagnostic lights" on the back do not come on. The only light that comes on is the "standby Power" light next to where the psu plugs into the motherboard.
I've found other post on different forums and have tried to remove and replace the battery and that didn't work.
I guess I'll just keep trying to go over what I did until someone can think of something I missed.

When I re-installed the CPU I bent 3 tiny pins. I have tried getting them straight but now I scared to try and re-install it.

Now to unbend pins, use a small flat pliers, those that do not have gripping tips like "teeth". the cost is small and found at decent h/w and/or electronics stores or Radio Smack. Another trick is to use a ballpoint pen cartridge(metal). Only those that retract when clicked. Place pen to loop on bent pin and gently bend back. You can also try a jeweler's type screwdrivers, very small. Of course, if you bend the pins you compromised their integrity, so be ready if you break to buy replacement.

Could I have damaged something when blowing the dust out? I got the pins straight on the Microprocessor and it looks fine now and installed.

Power Switch

So your power switch broke seems unlikely but it is. Now this being Dell it dosent use a 2pin to plug into the motherboard for the switch they use a ribbon so... GOOD LUCK TRYING TO FIND A REPLACEMENT FOR THE SWITCH!

I turned a dustoff can upside down and sprayed it on a motherboard for 2 mins and nothing happend while it was on. And if you damaged any pins it wouldnt affect boot up. The computer would turn on no matter wht even if theres no proc or ram videocard hardrive it will still boot.
