Upgrade to Internet Explorer - No

by DaveRichard - 6/27/09 6:45 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I ran IE7 from the time it came out until IE8 was available with no problems... ever.
I upgraded to IE8 and for about half the links I clicked it would come back with "IE8 has encountered a problem and will have to shut down"
This went on for five or six weeks, so I switched to Firefox and have never looked back.
I did keep IE8 on the machine in case I ran into a problem with FireFox.
So far (about a month) FireFox has not failed.

IE 7 vs 8

by CMCP-Sales - 6/27/09 6:46 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I use IE 7 without any problems
I tried IE 8 but it seemed to want to block certain websites I've been going to for years. And could not find out how to stop it so I rolled back to 7.
Now windows update keeps Turing to get me to update to IE8.

IE 7 or 8

by Z-Man - 6/27/09 7:16 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have recently up graded to IE 8 and I am not sure if I am going to stay with it. The nice thing about upgrading is if you really don't like 7 or 8 you can uninstall them through controle panel-add remove programs and you will be back to IE6. I have herd of some problems with this upgrade, lockups and crashes, but this seems to be rare and useally due an exstitig problem with the system. There is more security added to these newer versions but acording to the virus scans I checked I don't see a big change from IE6 to IE8. I see a lot of things still getting through I thiught would be checked and stopped. I really do not like the floder tabs effect but that can be turned off along with some of the new security. There are several other pop up windows I'm not crazy about but after turning these off it really dose not offer any more security than IE6. The jury is still out on if I am going to keep IE8, but like I said it's easy to go back to IE6. Goog Luck

no problem

by rosiejim - 6/27/09 7:21 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have M/S 2000XP Professional with SP3 . Having tried IE7 last year with no problems but preferring IE6 at that time I went back to IE6 and settled there . A friend was running IE7 with no problems and so earlier this year decided to give IE7 another try . I have settled down with IE7 and personally can recommend it . Now the feedback with IE8 is not encouraging and I would not touch it with a bargepole .

IE7 and IE8 problems with MusicMatch Jukebox

by Josepe-sv - 6/27/09 7:39 AM In reply to: no problem by rosiejim

IE7 let slow performance Windows. If update fron IE6 to IE8 the machines run normal (not slow).
But my favorite mp3 player MusicMatch Jukebox 7.1 dont start again if install IE7 or IE8. It work nice under IE5/IE6.
This mean I use Mozilla 3 instead IE. No problem. If have Vista there is way to solve this. I was trying to install MMJB 10 (the last version kwown) under Vista, but no success.
I hope you know what can I do to keep using MMJB7.1
I dont like other players.

If you find headaches great, please upgrade to 8!

by jgm7683 - 6/27/09 7:48 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

When IE7 came out, we had problems at work with computers auto-upgrading to it as it as marked a "critical update." We had to change configuration to get some of the machines working again while others worked right after installation.

Now IE8 hit the computers - again because it is marked as a "critical update" and the proverbial excrement hit the cooling device.... IE8 is not compatible with approximately 80% of the web tools we use, and we've had to remove it in 100% of the cases. Simple reconfiguration did not fix the problems, and we still have not been advised as to why this is by our tech support. (I work a tech support desk, and our ticketing system is not compatible with IE8 - until and unless they tell us it'll be OK to upgrade to it, we need to keep it off our machines.)

Oddly, Firefox has no problem interfacing with our ticketing system, and strangely runs it about 40-50% faster... so if anyone were looking for an updated browser, especially home users (as company policies may restrict you from installing it), I'd suggest going to Firefox.

IE8 has too many changes over previous browsers, and even installing it on my home PC, I can't use some sites I'd had bookmarked, such as web games and puzzle sites. They just fail to work. IE7 can be modified to work, but be wary if upgrading to IE8... or wait for IE9, when Microsoft will have "fixed" the "features" and the next group of security holes is discovered...

IE8 All the Way

by Impreza WRX - 6/27/09 8:06 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I've been cautious with upgrading IE, as is always the case when OEM Systems (DELL!!!) "break the rules" when customizing Windows so it has their name on it, which then breaks compatibility with IE.

Since your system is custom built, there is less chance of that happening. I've rolled out IE8 on many systems now, and it is a worthy upgrade. It adds many features IE6 is lacking, and it is faster than IE7. It also has "compatibility view" which emulates the rendering of IE6 for those sites that also "break the rules" to conform to IE6's rendering.

These days, running on an aging browser is a bad idea, as unfixed security holes become more prevalent and Evilware gets pushed into your system. It's no fun reinstalling Windows clean after a Format and having to reinstall alll your apps and restore all your backup'ed data, all because www.afakeantiviruswebsite.com infected your system through the aging IE6.

Upgrade to IE 7; hold off on IE8

by jhorwitz - 6/27/09 8:29 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have been running IE 8 under Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1--I "upgraded" the system to IE 8 from IE 7 a few weeks ago. This is an HP Core 2 Duo processor system with 2 GB of memory that originally came with Vista and IE 7 preinstalled when I bought it a couple of years ago and I updated it with Vista SP1 (SP2 is ready for install as I write this).

I also have a Dell Windows XP Home system (currently down with a bad hard drive) and my fiancé has a Dell Windows XP Media Center Edition system running IE 7.

I started with IE 6 on my XP system and upgraded to IE 7 shortly after it came out. I hated it and removed it almost immediately.

As I recall, this Vista system came with IE 7 which, I think, must have matured by that time because I loved it--the tabbed browsing is a must-have upgrade, in my opinion. My fiancé runs IE 7 on her Dell system (Windows XP Media Center Edition), also without problem. Along the way, I re-upgraded my own XP system to IE 7 and, by that time, the problems must have been fixed because I loved it on the XP system, too.

However, a few weeks ago I upgraded my Vista system to IE 8. Again, I am not happy, but that's not for the features: It's for the performance problems. My main complaint is that I have had lots of websites that couldn't be found, and it wasn't because of the "cannot find" errors--the system either says "Done" on the status bar, with a blank page showing, or it keeps "grinding away" without ever finding a webpage or giving up. I think I have diagnosed that the existence of the problem depends on which tab is being used in IE 8:

It seems that, counting from the left (tab 1), tabs that are multiples of four are problematic! I can't explain why this should be so, but copying the address, pasting it into a new tab that's not a multiple of four, and hitting ENTER or the "Go to" arrow in the address bar usually gets a quick trip to the website. Pasting the address into a new "multiple of four" tab often doesn't work. The count isn't exact and might change (I'm not sure) if tabs are closed along the way!

Am I going to remove IE 8? No. At this point, it is just a significant nuisance, much less of one than going back to IE 7 and later returning to IE 8.

In your case, since you have not already installed IE 8, I heartily recommend you install IE 7 (you'll love the tabbed browsing!) and hold off on IE 8 for a bit longer.

Good luck!

JERRY

Use Firefox or Chrome Instead

by sarf - 6/27/09 8:31 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I recommend using Firefox or Chrome over upgrading from IE6. With Firefox, you have the benefit of the addon's. With Chrome, you have a browser that does not crash easily, but you will encounter some sites that are not yet Chrome friendly. For example watching TV shows you might have missed during the week. I prefer doing my internet banking on Firefox over IE, since I can clean all cookies and temporary files before and after login to my bank account. If you must upgrade, definitely IE8.

Windows IE 7 or 8 upgrade

by Shantj - 6/27/09 10:17 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

First to start off with, I custon built my own computer system, I have a dual core prossor 3.0, upgradeable quade core with 2 gigs ram it is a 64 bit system in all but my OS is still onlt a XP 32 bit and I will upgrade that soon to pro. 64 bit soon. As soon as I can updrade to the 64 bit OS system I plan to add 6 more gig. for a total of 8 gigs. I can go 32 gig of ram but thats just pushing it. I also have 2 250 gig SATA drives.

I have used IE just about from the time it came out and have upgraded to each in time. I upgraded to IE 7 with my older system and never had any problems with it, I was also using SP3 on my older system as well as on this newer one I have now. IE 7 did seem to run a little faster than IE 6 did. My old computer was single core 2.2 gig prossor with 2 gig ram and I did for a time use EI 7 on this older one also with no problems.

I did use IE7 on my new system and had no problems with it there either.

However I'm now using EI 8 on my new system and other than looking a little differnt and handling some this differntly I can't see a whole lot of chances, it seem to work well and my be a little faster than EI 7, and I do have a 7 meg download speed DSL line and I've had that for sometime now for both computers so that has not changed.

It does look differnt a litle fancier, and you get Window Live with it. I don't use most of, I just don't think it's needed. But I think it will work with with a single core 32 bit OS system, but may a little slower. Of that I'm not sure and I have not found any bugs as yet, but it is still new.

If you do upgrade to IE 7 or 8 and don't like it, just remember the date and time you downloaded and installed it ( wright it down ) and just do a restore to that date, that works for me most of the time, some viruses will not let you do that, but anything you get from MSN is checked and checked again so that should not be a problem.

My IE8 upgrade just got pushed to me thru updates

by TheRadMan - 6/27/09 10:20 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I would say that IE6 is not too secure unless you have a full knowlege, understanding and control of scripts and "BrowserHelperObjects". I do agree that after some modification, Explorer6 can be locked down.

For me, the step from IE7 to IE8 was "pushed" upon all of my XPpro SP3 OS computers, without my approval, by Windows Update.
It did ask me to accept the change after a large chunk of my bandwidth was used for the code download.

I really think the majority of High-Tech workers still use XPpro SP3 despite impending EndOfLife

Although hesitant at first, the choice to move to IE8 seems to have been a good one.
IE8 seems to follow the internet web protocols better and the compatibility mode helps with older Web programming. As for performance claims, I do not see that much speed difference. I must use IE8 for some of my work in accessing Telecommunications Equipment Elements.

However, for my home work, I suggest that Google Chrome with Incognito is a very good alternate, and works nicely right along side IE8.

Summary:
My vote is for you to update to IE8 for the primary reason of improved security.
My supplemental recommendation is to load Chrome in addition to the IE8 for personal browsing.

Upgrade to IE7 or 8

by n2kpr - 6/27/09 10:59 AM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have XP Home basic on the desktop and XP Professional on the laptop. I have not had any trouble with IE 6 or 7. I have not tried 8 yet and like you, I am hesitant to do so. I would suggest to to download IE6,7,and 8 to a cd so you can go from one to another to try them out.

Absolutely Upgrade

by Ldans - 6/27/09 1:16 PM In reply to: Should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7 or 8? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This is really simple to answer,YES , especially if you read and get emails from C-Net like I do . C-Net always talks about new browsers ,software and OS's when they come out in there reviews , read them first as they play with this stuff before we get to sometimes . Also there are some users that will give there take on what they have come accross . IE6 is very slow , buggy and has alot of security issues , IE7 was not much better or faster to load up . Now we have IE8 , it does load up faster and there are less issues than the previous browsers and also many new items they have included that Firefox already had . Personally , I would reccomend to use Firefox , Firefox just seems to always work with the least amount of problems of all browsers out there . And yes , you can go back to IE6 if you would like to , but why ? You update your Windows software all the time and low and behold Windows Updates tells you that you also should upgrade your browser too . Hummmmm , they know theres issues and thats why they ask you to update your browser . Hope this helps out , good luck in your decision .
