Here is the thread:
My iMac business machine was not able to automatically
turn off after being shut down probably because
I was not able to close the open applications before the shutdown then.
I also noticed that it produced a humming sound until I turned it off
manually by giving the power button a long press. Some files have been
recovered in the "Trash" bin.
I am just concerned though that the same thing happened yesterday
evening in spite of the fact that I already closed all open applications
before the shutdown. I hope you can check my iMac before something
serious happens.
you have something corrupt in the operating system of your Mac.
Take your OS X installation disk, or the disks that came with the computer, boot from it and run the installer. At the prompt, choose Archive and Install and check the Preserve Settings box.
Allow the installer to run, reboot, update via Software Update and you should be good to go
DO NOT select any option other than Archive and Install

are just files that the system put there.
After a crash, holding down the power button, the system saves a number of files that were in use and, after a successful reboot, it puts them in the trash. They are not required.
It saves them for possible use during the reboot

I had a similar problem - found an answer on an Apple forum. I had TiVo Desktop installed and it did not shutdown when I tried to shut down my iMac. I shut down TiVo Desktop and everything was fine. Your problem may be something like this.
This happened to me, recently. I ran Tech Tools 5 and found the volume information was corrupt, so the software fixed it and everything has been fine.
