Well i would upgrade to IE8 just for the fact it is more secure and has a slew of features that will make your browsing experience even better. On that note I would then Download Firefox or Opera because they also have even more and customizable features that IE doesn't and are far more secure for browsing the web ie. more protection from drive by downloads such as spyware and activeX style viruses and trogens.
AS YOU CAN SEE FROM LINKS AND INFOR BELOW ie6 IS VERY UNSAFE FOR WEB BROWSING, ie8 IS BY FAR SAFE WITH ONLY ONE UNPATCHED ADVISORY, AND FIREFOX AND OPERA ARE THE MOST SECURE WITH NO UNPATCHED ADVISORIES.
Here are unpatched issues with each browser
IE6: http://secunia.com/advisories/product/11/?task=advisories
Secunia has issued a total of 137 Secunia advisories in 2003-2009 for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x. Currently, 15% (21 out of 137) are marked as unpatched with the most severe being rated Moderately critical
IE8: http://secunia.com/advisories/product/21625/?task=advisories
Secunia has issued a total of 2 Secunia advisories in 2003-2009 for Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.x. Currently, 50% (1 out of 2) are marked as unpatched with the most severe being rated Less critical
Firefox 3: http://secunia.com/advisories/product/19089/?task=advisories
Secunia has issued a total of 15 Secunia advisories in 2003-2009 for Mozilla Firefox 3.x. Currently, 0% (0 out of 15) are marked as unpatched.
Opera: http://secunia.com/advisories/product/10615/?task=advisories
Secunia has issued a total of 22 Secunia advisories in 2003-2009 for Opera 9.x. Currently, 0% (0 out of 22) are marked as unpatched.
IE7: http://secunia.com/advisories/product/12366/?task=advisories
Secunia has issued a total of 36 Secunia advisories in 2003-2009 for Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.x. Currently, 22% (8 out of 36) are marked as unpatched with the most severe being rated Moderately critical
You appear to keep up with browser info, and elsewhere I read that
Netscape(that had tabbed browsing b4 my IE7) was replaced by, I think it said Firefox or Mozilla. So does anyone still use Netscape as finally updated b4 support was discontinued? Or is it something I should uninstall? I've barely used it since support ended a few years ago, not sure if it is safe, but liked it better than the IE version I used then, probably 6 or 7 I think.
I have Pent D, 2.8GHz, DualCore, 3GB Ram, 160GB HD, Windows XP, SP3(never had a single problem with the SP3 update, unlike some of the horror stories read, IE7. Decided against IE8 so far. The .NET update from whatever I had to 3.5 wasn't seamless -- had to uninstall and reinstall, now seems to be Ok. Not sure if browsing is actually slower with 3.5, but seems so maybe. If it is, it's only slightly slower.
But there is definitely consensus that not upgrading IE6 to 7 is foolish, for security reasons.
Would like again have a browser alt to IE -- what is best of the new breed if Netscape is a bad option?
How I miss Netscape 4.7...
Netscape is made by the same people that make Mozilla FireFox and the SeaMonkey Suite. SeaMonkey looks more like the old Netscape 4.x, but doesn't perform quite as good, FireFox doesn't look much like Netscape, but performs more like it!
the fact is, Internet Explorer is linked to the operating system, if you download an exploit or other malware with another browser, you will still get pwned, because of the inherent holes in the MS operating system. I not bashing MS, it is just a fact of computing life.
It does greatly mitigate the problem if you use FireFox with NoScript and Adblock Plus installed and activated.
what is difference getween unpatched vs patched??
I do pc repair and upgrades and I found with all the new technology IE 8 works less. IE 7 as alot of issues mostly performance sustaining but IE 8 works smoothly on both the pc's I have at home as well as the one's I have installed it on at work.
I meant to say "IE 8 works best" not less.
You should definitely upgrade, at least to IE7. I just worked on my ex-wife's computer because she was having problems with some websites and I was surprised to find that she still had IE6, and I'm not sure anymore (I've forgotten), but I think IE6 had an SP1 added to it, and this was the original version. Once I upgraded to IE7, the websites worked fine.
Then on my own computer, when they made IE8 a part of Windows Updates, I decided to try it, but not before my two sons had already tried it and highly recommended it. I like it very much and have not had any trouble with it since then--nothing much to speak of, anyway.
The ONLY problem I have had with it was that when I use YouTube and I open an e-mail, when I close it, it still shows up as being dark black, which means that it is a new-unread message, even though I HAD read it. I have had no other problems with IE8. What do I do about my "YouTube problem"? I use Mozilla FireFox when I open my e-mail there, and that shows it as having been opened. I would highly recommend that you download FireFox in addition to IE7 or IE8 so you can use it if Internet Explorer should fail to work for you.
Microsoft is phasing out IE7, so their IE7 Homepage is now the IE8 Homepage, but you can still download IE7 at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=9AE91EBE-3385-447C-8A30-081805B2F90B&displaylang=en
You can download IE8 at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx
You can download FireFox (by Mozilla) at:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ie.html
or
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
Hope this helps.
From what I have read published by Microsoft, If you install SP3 before downloading Internet Explorer 7 or 8 and you have problems with either one, you have to unistall SP3 first before attempting to uninstall IE7 or IE8. There will be no removal process in the Add/Remove section because there will be none unitl you remove SP3.
Actually, if you install SP3 after IE7 or IE8, you need to uninstall SP3 before removing IE7/IE8. On the reverse, if you install SP3 and then IE7/IE8, then to remove SP3 you need to remove IE7/8 first.
When IE7 became available as a "recommended" Windows update, I let it download and install - much to my displeasure. I quickly unistalled it and returned to IE6. similarly, when IE8 was "recommended" as a Windows update, I installed it and took a look - for about 15 minutes. I then uninstalled it and had my IE6 back, good and trusty. If you like what you have and are comportable with it, stick with it.
It's not so much that IE8 is better than IE7 although it is. Upgrading to IE8 provides Windows XP and Vista with enhanced security. I don't use it anyway. I use Firefox. If I didn't use FF I'd use Chrome, Opera, or Safari instead of IE8 anyway.
try 7 first 1 did and liked it very much,i also use avast free home version and must say its better than you can pay for, and i use ad-aware free as a back up,i down a lot of music and movies and these two have never let me down,im running windows xp home my pc is going on 3years old, cheers
Nothing really new to add. I have 5 installations of XP Home/Pro on four different machines. (Two fully-independent installs on one machine, I select which one will boot by changing the boot sequence in Setup.) Go with Firefox--it is a better browser. Regarding IE, upgrade to 7. 8 does still have some bugs in it and the layout is more different from 6. You will definitely appreciate tabbed browsing once you get used to it. Also, Firefox (I don't know about MSIE, since I only use it for MS updates) has a "Recent closed tabs" option that lets you reopen the tab(s) you just accidentally closed or realize you still need. If it crashes, when you restart it it offers to re-open all tabs that were open before the crash.
By the way, to watch Windows Media Player files in Firefox you need a plug-in that Microsoft wrote.
