Problems with internet connection

by Maizey - 6/30/05 7:47 AM

My husband & I have two computers linked through a router and this morning, his computer did not have a connection. I've troubleshooted quite a bit and just cannot figure this out.

Troubleshooting that I've done (that obviously has not worked):

-Connected his computer directly to the cable box.
-Changed ethernet cards.
-Put ethernet card in a different slot.
-Ensured the ethernet was listed as working.
-Disabled the card to let it find new hardware.
-Ensured he has the latest drivers.
-Clicked the "repair" button - it stopped.
-Tried to update the IP.

Other info:
-We run Win XP
-Ethernet cards are Linksys NC100 (we're not wireless)

I'm at a loss as to what else to do... or what on earth could be the problem. I know enough to troubleshoot a bit and follow instructions, but I'm not necessarily technical.

If anyone has suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Try WINSOCKXPFIX.

Found with google.com, it repairs some settings that can cause this.

-> However if the cable, card is dead, it won't help.

I didn't see if you power cycled ALL the hardware.

Thank you, Bob.

My husband did d/l a game last night and perhaps it was bugged. I cleaned up his computer with Ad-Aware and then ran WINSOCKXPFIX and he was up & running again.

I have the programs on a disk now, so I'll file them under last-ditch attempts. I'm thrilled this one worked. Thanks again.

this has happened to the computers on my network before, simplest thing to do - restart your computer, it fixed the connection for me :)

Thanks for the response. Needless to say, I rebooted several times. Often it is the quick fix.

WINSOCKXPFIX was the answer this time. I guess he downloaded something that interferred with the registry.
