by KellyWelch - 7/21/07 1:22 AMMy cd burner won't burn anymore. It plays dvds and cds but won't burn with itunes or mediaplayer. Could this be caused by a dirty lens?

- what burning device you use (a 'cd burner won't play dvd's)
- what burning program you use
- what exactly happens if you try to burn a cd or a dvd
The most likely outcome of this issue is:
a. Lens cleaner doesn't help.
b. Replacing the device by a new one is the solution.
But it just might be different in your case.

is a Philips DVD+-RW DVD8801 in a Dell E510 that is barely a year old. Of course the warranty expired RIGHT before the drive quit burning. I have tried burning with different brands of cdrs and with Roxio, Mediaplayer, & iTunes. None will work.

The disk will sound like it stops and starts 4 or 5 times then the program will just sit there for awhile, saying it's writing the first track. After a bit the program will cancel the burn.

Plz provide solution.

Thanks for the advice but even after trying other burning softwares the same error occurs.However if you are implying "another burner" as installing a new dvd r&w rom drive, then i've not yet tried it.
Please suggest the best dvd burner hardware to buy.
My system configuration is:-
>Intel Core2 Duo.
>1 GB DDR RAM.
>160 GB HDD SATA.
>Windows XP sp2.
Let's say you did everything but change the drive.

And the CD/DVD lens cleaner, other media and reduced record speed to 2x,
The drive is the next item.
Now there are folk that will spend months trying to get an old drive to work. Here I'm lucky to be replacing a drive a week at the office, shop and labs so I know to not get bound up on trying to fix a drive.
Swap early to save time and money.

Too often a new DVDRW drive cures this.

There are rare times there are other fixes but I try a new drive first.
