How do I restore IE6 back from IE8

by Heartsy - 6/1/09 7:44 PM

I have a Dell demension with Windows XP, service pack 3. I am 75 years old and my husband is 80 years old. I have used the computer for many years and understand a lot about it. My husband is 80 years old and has been using the computer for about 4 years. I have for many years had IE6. I kept getting notices to upgrade to IE8, which I did. I immediately do not like it. My husband cannot understand the toolbar because it is different from IE6. When you get his age, things cannot be changed up too much. He has quit using the computer now. Can someone please tell me how to to restore IE6. I would be very grateful.

No one recommends IE6

First, let me say that while IE7 and IE8 are different, they are better as well. In fact, they are BUNCHES safer then IE6. There was security holes that can not be corrected, and that was the reason Microsoft went to IE7.

There are some security issues fixed going from IE7 to IE8 also, but the biggest reason for IE8 was to put some features that the other popular browsers (Firefox, and Opera, and Safari) had. People wanted those features.

You can shut off many of the default things that you find bothersome, or complicated, in IE8, so I really suggest that you find out what you can do to reduce the confusion with it.

As for removing IE8 from your WinXP system, you should be able to go to the Control Panel, find the Add/Remove Programs area, and there should be an entry for IE8. Selecting that you should have a way of removing it. When you remove it, that should take you back to the prior IE-version you had. However, that may take you back to IE7.

If it does take you back to IE7, and you still really want IE6, you could do a complete system restore. Which will put your computer back to the state it was the day your first bought it. Of course, restoring the system that way will wipe out all of your installed programs since that time, and all your files and such. So, if you go that route, your should make sure you first copy off all your data and files to another drive (internal or external), so that you can place those files back once you get your computer working again.

That really is not an easy task to do, and I would not suggest you do it. It is long and tedious, and too easily you might lose something you just forgot to copy off. Plus, like I said IE6 is not a safe browser to use.

You might even try out some of those other browsers, since some are a bit more simplistic than IE8. But if you or your husband do not like the change (and improvements) from using IE6, you may not like learning how to use those other browsers either.

try a change

I'm not a whole lot younger than yourself and understand not wanting to change. But Internet Explorer anything is a problem. I use Opera and after just a little bit of confusion dropping Internet Explorer I found Opera easier, safer, faster and once again easier to use. It's also easy to set the type size as large as you want (my eyes need bigger than IE offers). Try it, you know enough about computers to see if what I think of Opera is true for you also.

IE

I agree with you on using Opera. I use Opera 98% of the time but there are some areas where Opera will not work at which time I use Firefox. I very seldom ever use Internet Explorer because it is too slow opening up and I really don't care for it at all. If anyone is smart they will stop using IE and start using Opera or Firefox.

Retreiving a previous IE version...

by Brechan - 6/20/09 2:00 AM In reply to: Retrieving IE6 by Ian F. Macleod

I too installed IE8 thinking that I should keep up with all the 'new and improved' versions, I found that IE8 wouldn't show 95% of websites pictures (or even allow pictures to be shown in my email).
Needless to be said,I was quite upset, so this is what I did...

First; I went to CNET.com and looked up 'web browsers', from there I clicked on the link for IE8, once on this page I clicked on 'previous versions'...here you can find almost all the previous versions of Internet Explorer.

http://download.cnet.com/Internet-Explorer/3000-2356_4-10595922.html

Second, I downloaded the previous version that I wanted onto a flash drive (or you could download it onto your desktop).

Third; I went to 'uninstall programs' from my control panel, and uninstalled IE8.

Lastly, I installed the version of IE fron my flash drive.

Watch for the version of IE8 to show up on your 'Windows Update' (wanting to be installed), right-click on this update, and pick "hide this update".
Doing this last step will stop windows Update from automatically installing on your computer, and you will never have to worry about IE8 getting installed without your knowing about it.

Changing back to earlier versions of Internet Explorer.

by counsler777 - 6/20/09 9:17 AM In reply to: How do I restore IE6 back from IE8 by Heartsy

I also was very disappointed with IE8 and wanted to change back to my earlier version of Internet Explorer.
1. Go the Microsoft website. They are constantly changing the website so you may have to do some navigating to find the right hyper-link.
2. Go to the Download Center.
3. Find the link to download IE7. I really don't recommend IE6.
4. Save it to your Desktop for easy retrival later.
5. After the download is complete close Internet Explorer.
6. Open Control Panel and go to add/remove programs.
7. Select IE8 and remove.
8. Close Control Panel.
9. Double click the Icon for IE Setup and install.
That will take care of your issue.

IE 6

by jrap30 - 6/22/09 6:20 AM In reply to: How do I restore IE6 back from IE8 by Heartsy

If you can not revert back to IE 6............you can try the AVANT browser that someone suggested last year on CNET...it is base on the same browser code as IE6. The toobar is the same but the colors in the tool bar are different...slightly translucent. I just check on CNETs download side...right side click on browser and it comes up in their top 10 listing.

Thanks for your help.

I had someone that knew a lot about computers to check mine. He re-arranged the toolbar so that it would be easier to use for my husband. He removed any add-ons that we did not need. He advised me not to go back to IE6 at all because it was obsolete and outdated. He said that he did not think that any updates were being issued for it. We are now happy with IE8 and it is working well for us. Thanks for all of your help.

Glad you did not go to IE6

by ChuckT - 6/22/09 3:05 PM In reply to: Thanks for your help. by Heartsy

As most people here tried to tell you, IE6 is not the browser to go to. IE7 is more secure, but even then there will be a time when updates for it will cease. IE8 is more secure, plus there are some real nice features if you tuff it out long enough to learn them. (I don't like all things in IE8 either.)

Sure, other browsers, like Firefox and Opera may be less susceptible to most of the common bad things that some bad people write, but as the holes are discovered in IE, they get plugged. Just be sure that you have your Microsoft updates done automatically for you.

Those other browsers could also let bad things happen, but most times the people who write the bad crap are focusing on the "big browser on the block," IE.

security is just one of many reasons not to use IE

by gulfstreamtec - 6/22/09 6:10 PM In reply to: Glad you did not go to IE6 by ChuckT

When I switched to Opera I didn't stop or change my security setup, I switched only because it's so much better than IE in other ways, primarly speed. IE 6 or 7 are just inferior and having followed Microsofts ability to produce inferior software it would surprise me if IE8 wasn't the same. What I find surprising is how many people stick with it. Though each to their own, feature for feature there's not a single thing IE can point to and claim superior anything.
