Free as in lunch

Microsoft is launching its free security suite next week - the 23rd of June to be precise.
It was going by the funky codename Morro, but is launching under the duller name of Microsoft Security Essentials. It replaces Windows OneCare - and yes we do know what that sounds like.
Microsoft Security Essentials will be available for users in Brazil, Israel and the US initially and for PCs using Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7.
China will get onboard later this summer.
The service aims to protect machines against viruses and other malware. The free download takes only 140MB, but you will have to sign up to the hated Windows Genuine Advantage.

It sounds great except its Microsoft. With the constant patching MS does on its different OS's all the time can we really believe in the security of its suite. There are plenty of current programs that work and some of the best ones are free. I'll wait for a while and see what happens with the suite before I jump on the bandwagon.
to touch any new MS product until it's SP 1 has been released?
Given that many didn't feel "Paid" One Care was the be all & end all,
I hesitate to bet the free version will be much better. ![]()
We'll wait and see its freshman track record after it gets reviewed by av-comparatives.org, if they even deem it worth testing. They did with the wasted One Care line, so they may give Microsoft another try. I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick with my free McAfee Enterprise I get for being a University student. It's on the top three of av-comparatives.
For everyone else, I'd suggest Avira. It tends to remain better rated than AVG and was pretty much number one at one point.
