Windows Media Player Classic doesn't open

by knitedemon - 6/13/09 1:50 PM

I'm using Windows XP professional(SP 2)
When i try to open MPC i get this error message, "The instruction at "0x7c906278" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be written."
I don't have any problems with other players, VLC, Zoom, WMP, RealPlayer function properly. I prefer using WMP classic, I've reinstalled Xp and it MPC was functioning, but I started getting the same error message after sometime. I've even disabled automatic updates, but nothing works.

First thing

First thing, is that MPC has nothing to do with Microsoft or Windows. It's just MediaPlayer Classic, no Windows or Microsoft in the name. It's an important thing to note, otherwise you're going to get some people confused and giving you bad answers.

Second thing, have you actually tried running a memory tester? Bad RAM can be a very screwy thing. It can affect just a single program, and seemingly at random.

Third, have you tried using a more recent version of MPC? Like MediaPlayer Classic Home Cinema? The original MediaPlayer Classic hasn't been updated in over a year, and is pretty well considered abandoned.

I've been using Klite

by knitedemon - 6/13/09 3:39 PM In reply to: First thing by Jimmy Greystone

I've been using Klite and CCCP codecs. It is the most recent version with MPC Home Cinema. The thing is that if I use CCCP, it also has a Zoom player, the Zoom player functions flawlessly. I find that MPC is more convenient to use than other players, I even tried to install it as a stand alone, but the same problem occurs.
I haven't tried to run a memory tester yet, since ZoneAlarm is running a scan on my system and it's taking a long time. I will reboot once the scan is over and run memory tester.
If there aren't any problems with my RAM then what other problem could there be?

I ran memory tester

I ran memory tester, it showed that there wasn't any problem with my RAM. I reinstalled MPC, but I still get the same error message.

Personally

Personally, I just use FFDshow for all my codec needs. It's based on the same libavcodec that powers VLC. It's a sort of all in one solution for decoding just about every kind of video there is out there. And my guess would be that you have a bad or buggy codec that's causing your problems.

One of the things I like best about FFDShow, is that libavcodec, which makes up its core, contains a LOT of hand written SIMD code. Every possible place they can make use of MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSE4, 3DNow!, etc, they do. This creates a VERY efficient decoding engine, making use of every possible speed enhancement your computer's processor can give you. Often times it is more efficient at decoding video than the official codecs.

I Have Run MPC (Several Versions)

by tobeach - 6/13/09 11:26 PM In reply to: Windows Media Player Classic doesn't open by knitedemon

over the years, and using the K-lite pack with it's enclosed codecs have NEVER seen such an error. Is it possible the CCCP codecs have a bug in them? Where you get it from CAN be important! Always "right click" scan
with AV/AS before opening.
Mine built w/ Inno-Setup came thru these:

http://www.codecguide.com/faq.htm

http://www.free-codecs.com/K_Lite_Codec_Pack_download.htm

Suppose it also possible that there's contested setting or other conflict between the numerous players onboard. I might suspect Real Player as likely being the one who doesn't want to play nice w/ others
by refusing to give up hold on some setting/path another needs? (just a W.A.G)

I'd first try getting & installing new codecs from above sources just in case you've got a bad build. Also do malware scans since codec packs are a major source of trouble currently. Good Luck! :-)

I was using MPC

by knitedemon - 6/14/09 5:16 PM In reply to: I Have Run MPC (Several Versions) by tobeach

I was using MPC in my previous system and it never gave me any problems. I've tried various codecs just to get MPC to function properly. I've downloaded Klite again from the link you posted, thanks. If this doesn't work then I'm gonna reinstall windows. That's it,I just want MPC to run!

Something to consider

by Jimmy Greystone - 6/14/09 6:08 PM In reply to: I was using MPC by knitedemon

Something to consider, and you can take it for whatever it's worth to you.

I've been looking around at different Windows based media center apps, and on one of them they advised against installing codec packs because they tend to create problems compared to installing codecs individually. Again, this is where FFDShow is so handy. It's a sort of one stop codec pack in and of itself. You install this one thing, and you've got something that can decode just about any audio or video format you toss at it.

Thanks

Thanks, nothing worked, so in desperation I reinstalled XP. This time I installed only FFDShow along with Haali, and now both MPC as well as MPC Homecinema are performing as I want them to. Once again, thanks a lot, otherwise I would have ended installing a couple of other codec packs. FFDShow works like a charm, it's able to play any format like you said.

All of the above.

Is great advice. Let me add, duplicate it with 2 links.

1. http://kmplayer.en.softonic.com/ has many codecs built in.
2. Same for VLC Player. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
