Windows 7 is awesome. I have it installed on a Thinkpad T41, and it runs wonderfully. If ya wanna get win7 on a Thinkpad T4x, but are clueless, here goes. Note, systems that have only the shipping config of 256 or even parhaps 512MB will NOT work, as both a) the sys reqs are 1GB, and b) I have 1280MB and plenty of it is in use. Also, some 20GB configs may not have enough HDD space. 30GB will be enough, but with little space for other stuff. I installed on 40GB. Also, you need a DVD burner. BE SURE TO BACK UP EVERYTHING! Sorry. Okay. Here goes.
Step One - get Windows 7 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspx . Caution: it is a BIG download (2.5GB) and requires a DVD burner.
Step Two - burn ISO to DVD (single-layer) using http://download.cnet.com/Active-ISO-Burner/3000-2646_4-10602452.html . Free and the fastest.
Step Four - Pop the disk in the drive, and turn on the computer.
Step Five - Just click through the installation. When it asks if you want a clean install, select yes. Your recovery partition should stay.
Step Six - Wait two hours.
Step Seven - After it reboots, connect to an ethernet port on your router, and go to lenovo.com/support to get the XP drivers for
a) Wireless
b) Fingerprint reader
c) Video
Step Eight - Reboot after installing drivers.
Step Nine - All should work.
No pictures (sorry), but I might make another with pictures. Please note that Video drivers are not necca. but in order to play games are. The 7500 drivers do work, but the drivers for the 128MB cards in the T4xp computers my not. Should be about the same for other PCs.
This is a great guide for those looking to do the same thing.
Have you had a pretty enjoyable experience thus far? Are you checking out the XP mode?
Cheers,
Ron

i installed Windows 7 on a machine i've had for about 7 years. my machine is a home built, AMD Athlon XP 1800+. i increased my ram to 1.5 GB DDR 1 400MHZ. i have a 200GB hard drive that i partitioned. i have an nvidia 5200fx and a wireless card. once i installed win 7, i couldn't get online. i installed drivers for a wireless card and was able to connect to my wireless signal. windows update downloaded whatever drivers i needed and now my system is up and running perfectly. the only issue i ran into was, i used windows xp to create a backup of my files through the windows file transfer program in xp. when i went into Windows 7, i couldn't import the files over because i didn't use the windows 7 file transfer application to create the files. plus i had downloaded the iso but didn't burn it to a dvd. i logged into XP and mounted the iso and ran the install from windows. not the best idea. i did a custom install because i couldn't do a upgrade. i wish i could have did a fresh install because i had to clean up my system after i had windows 7 up and running fully.
