Dealing with computer problems

by edtalkingbird09 - 6/6/09 11:19 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you generally deal with your computer problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

For a long time I tried to use company tech support, but, they were always putting me on "hold" while they filmed new scenes for "Slumdog Millionaire". When they did take me off hold all they wanted to do was sell me a genuine faux Rolex. I finally learned to stop and study the problem and fool with what I knew should fix it and if it didn't I would walk away from it for up to a week. When I came back to it, usually a bulb would light up over my head and I would comment to myself, "How come I forgot to do that?". That usually solved the problem. If not, I would check the forums and hunt down a tech savvy friend and get it dun.

NOW I try fixing it on my own.. I learned my lesson

by drea720 - 6/6/09 11:56 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you generally deal with your computer problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

A few years ago I was having trouble with my PC. It was really slow and seemed to be bogged down with crap. I tried a few "home remedies" for freeing up some space, but it didn't help. Soon my PC stopped responding to anything and everything, so I took it down the street to the local fix-it shop. The guy at the shop really gave me the heebie-jeebies, but I was desperate so I gave him my computer to clean up. (When you're a college student, your PC is your life!) A few days, and $300 later I got my computer back. It was fixed and running better, but I wish I'd trusted my instincts. I have no proof, but I'm pretty sure that creepy man violated my computer! When I turned my PC over to him I had a picture of me and a few girlfriends as the desktop background picture. He commented on the picture, just like any pervy old man would... To fix my computer he had to restore all defaults, but when the computer was returned to me that picture was again my background image (he pointed out that he replaced it for me). That means he had to search through all of my pictures (thousands of them) to find that particular one. That's when I realized that I hadn't secured any of my personal documents before I'd surrendered my computer. Not only was he able to see my many pictures, but he had access to all my sensitive information; tax returns, bank account info, resumes, IP address, school info, etc! I definitely felt violated. I noticed things were moved around a lot, and I think a few things were missing. --Plus I'm pretty sure he now has a few of my pictures that he can cherish forever.

Next time if I can't fix it myself, I'll just get a new computer!

software--online--savvy--repair shop

by ZoeButton55 - 6/7/09 6:34 PM In reply to: Poll: How do you generally deal with your computer problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

-- I try to fix it on my own. First, I will try to fix my PC by myself with some programs/software, such as registry cleaner.

-- I do research online and usually find the answers there. (How does this usually turn out?)
This is my first step I will take.

-- I call a tech-savvy friend or relative. (How does this usually turn out?)
If I couldn't find out the solution online, I then turn to my friends.
If my friends can't solve the problem, then only to repair shop.

Sort of Two Answers in One

Wouldn't searching for answers on the Internet, then using what you find to fix your computer problem also answer the 'Fix It Yourself' too?
I have done that several time. My average is 5 out of 7 in the last 2 years. Twice I have a (handy, near by) friend straighten out what was going haywire on the computer.

Other is my choice

I have been at this game for 10+ years and I have employed everyone of the listed tactics at one time or another. When I am totally stumped, an e-mail to a specific company usually produces the best results. The biggest falicy is the one thing fixes most, approach.
After a few years I was hoping that I could solve more and more problems by myself vis-a vis learning from past successes or failures. The computer repair industry is far to dynamic and broad to folow that belief. All you can do in todays computer world is learn as much as you can (not necessarily book learning), hold on tight for the ride, and consider most everything you tackle O.J.T..

Took a 2 year PC repair certification course years ago, soon to take A+ test. Found reading forums like this helps in understanding what people run into via PC problems. And keeps one informed on new problems. I generally fix friends machines locally.

Since I build my own systems I do the fixing. Of course I don't build my laptops but can, as a rule, take care of the majority of issues.

How do I deal with problems

by robell1 - 6/13/09 8:30 PM In reply to: Poll: How do you generally deal with your computer problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I answered that I usually try and fix myself but it is very difficult since there is so much I don't know about the computers and their programs. I have been going to ask Mr Lee Koo, just how so many of you people know so much about how these programs work etc. Did most of you take courses, go to school or what? I am lost and to how to study up on things and get answers to some of the problems that crop up. I find that I can understand programs and applications but when something goes wrong there doesn't seem to be a source to explain how to fix it. I seldom ask questions because most of them are probably very elementary and I'm sure people have more to do than answer some of my dumb questions.

Poll: How do you generally deal with your computer problems?

by MikeAldo - 6/15/09 11:49 AM In reply to: Poll: How do you generally deal with your computer problems? by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I suspect the answer to the poll is all of the below. Personally I try to fix it myself. If that doesn't work I search the internet for the problem. If that doesn't work I ask advice of forums. If the problem is specific to particular hardware or software I'll seek advice from the tech guys associated with that hardware or software. If all else fails restore the system. If your really desperate you could try the microsoft website!
