My wife and I received a US Treasury refund check today and I cannot figure what it's for. We've already filed and owed additional tax for 2008. I've looked the check over, under and sideways for possibly being fraudulent but it looks real enough. There was no accompanying letter such as we've gotten if an adjustment was made to our tax return. I've checked to see if this is related to the 2009 stimulus plan (lowered withholding) but nothing in the math adds up to the $400, $800 (individual/joint filing) that's been suggested. Should I tear it up? ![]()
If later it turns out there's a mistake, then you may be able to get the debt forgiven. Yes, there's a procedure for doing that when IRS makes a mistake to your benefit.
After a long wait time on the IRS customer service line I was able to speak to a very nice lady who pulled up my return. She said they'd found a math error and I'd declared income of 200 bucks more than I made. I'd also forgotten the $300 stimulus credit (didn't pay attention...didn't know it was there). Well, I did forget the credit but redid my math and it was perfect to the penny. She said I should be getting a letter of explanation. I'll be anxious to see their math vs mine. In any event, the check is legit. ![]()

we know it's our civic duty to turn it over quickly. ![]()
Legit, yes. But cashable? ![]()
I have direct deposit, and specified it for the little bit I would get from the package when my taxes were filed.
As part of the package a lump sum along with the lower withholding. The lump sum was to come at about this time of year,
My guess is that the ank is quite familiar with the checks.
