If you turn the podcast up loud enough to hear the talking when you guys start laughing, it's way too loud.

I also have problems hearing the voice mails, I find they're a lot quiter than the rest of the podcast.

Gotta agree. In fact, most podcasts on the web need to be audio leveled.

What I've been doing is downloading the podcasts, decoding them to a .wav file, running them through Levelator, and then recoding them back to MP3. That way all the podcasts I listen to are at the same volume, and it really helps with hearing everything while riding in the car.
