Here's a solution to your problem

by marty104 - 5/30/09 7:00 AM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

What has worked for me when I encountered this problem is to do a full system restore. Just be sure to back up your data and have your original program disks available.

Windows Vista update problem.

by psychgod7 - 5/30/09 8:53 AM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi, have you made sure that the URL of the download page has been added to your firewall safe system settings? It does sound like a firewall problem but you need to make sure that your internet options settings are also correct.

Windows Vista updates

by daocampo - 5/30/09 9:52 AM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I will assume that all of your basic network connections are working and you are not running any third-party antivirus firewall program such as Norton or McAfee Internet Security that may be blocking your PC's ports to download updates. You should go to Windows Update and change your PC's settings so that updates are downloaded and installed automatically. Go to Microsoft's website and download the latest version of Windows Installer. You can manually download Windows Live Setup and install Windows Live Messenger from there along with the any other suite of Windows Live products. If you still have problems, you may want to run Windows system restore and roll back to a point before you started having problems but if several months have passed since the problem started, I would rather try to isolate what is causing the problem and resolve it by running your system clean, that is, you can run msconfig.exe and set to diagnostic startup and see if a startup program is causing the problem.

Update Problem

by gwayner - 5/30/09 10:15 AM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Hi:
Over the past couple of months I was not able to use update or restore. I finally found out the problem was caused by ZoneAlarm. Once ZA was removed they both worked perfectly on Vista Ultimate SP2.

Question regarding Vista Upgrades

by radwjw - 5/30/09 1:34 PM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I would simply ignore the upgrade if your computer is running well and you have no security issues. Simply wait for Windows 7 to come out, and hopefully Vista, in all it's incarnations, will simply fade from our memories like a horrible nightmare we want to forget.

Vista Update Problem

by Ron Geiken - 5/30/09 2:53 PM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

If you haven't already got this fixed, go to Internet Explorer, Internet Options, Advanced and go to setting Reset Internet Explorer Settings, and press that button. You might want to make a system restore point before doing that just in case it doesn't solve your problem. I had a friends machine that had the same problem, and after trying all the fixes that had been posted on a Vista Forum, decided to try doing that no knowing that it would solve things, and eureka all of a sudden the browser was working, and I could then download and install all the upgrades. It is possible that one of the add ons on IE was causing a a problem. Give that a try, and if it doesn't fix the problem, just do a system restore to get back to where you were in case that doesn't solve your particular problem.

vista updates

by frankgw - 5/30/09 4:49 PM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

sometimes microsoft update for vista will display available updates but not install them all..this is because it has detected your system does not need them...it's nothing to worry about...as regards downloading live messenger you should't have any problem..unless the windows installer which is part of the operating system has been corrupted...type in your search bar at top of screen..windows installer 3.5 and download it..after installing it restart computer and try again to download whatever you require!

Ms windows not responding

by leeventura - 5/30/09 8:12 PM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had a similar problem earlier this year. When I looked at my updates many major and recommended updates had failed to install. Missing the updates, I lost my ability to access the internet. I could not figure out what caused the problem. I ran all of the scans, ran PC tools, called MS, asked my internet service, brought my laptop to the Geeks who ran programs to locate the problem but everything checked out OK but the problem remained. No one could help. I tried to backup my system to a point I felt it was running well. That failed. I backed up everything I knew I needed to save. As a last resort I was told to reinstall the original software and start over. It took two times to cleanup the hard drive but then after reinstalling the software and adding back the saved doucments, and updating MS Vista, my system came back to life. I was able to download and reinstall all updates and my system has worked well since. Be patient as it took about 4 days before everything was back in place. Good luck and I hope you can also get back up and running. Lv

I would try a Vista Repair

by PudgyOne - 5/30/09 11:47 PM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

After some searching on the internet and helping another person with doing a Vista Repair using a slipstream disk, I have actually found a solution to make System Restore work again in Vista. I feel this will also repair Vista and allow Windows Updates to work, again.

When using vLite, under tasks, do NOT check the unattended box for Dell computers as the product key is on the motherboard. I would NOT select this feature and be near the computer when and if it asks for the product key. I have a feeling it will NOT ask for a product key because you're repairing Vista, NOT installing it.

I made a Vista Slipstream disk with vLite, however I could NOT add SP2 to the slipstream disk. When making the Slipstream disk, I could add some of Microsoft's hotfixes but NOT all of them.(Microsoft Hotfixes located at c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\) I did add the drivers on my system, by using Wndrvrbckup Backup Utilities, I then burned the image to a DVD.

How to do a System Repair with Vista using a Slipstream Disk made with vLite.

Make sure you're logged into an unrestricted account.

After you're logged in, then you insert the Slipstream Disk. Allow it to run. Choose install now.

Go Online to get the latest Updates.

The other screens did NOT appear about a Windows Key as I used an OEM Version of Vista and on a Dell computer, the product key is on the motherboard.

Now you click on Upgrade.

It seems like it sits in the compatibility mode for a while, but that's ok. It will eventually start. You leave the disk in until you see a screen that asks you about Windows Security(Windows Update Settings) and then about your clock settings.

It sometimes sits there and you think it's not responding but it's actually doing something. There were a few times I thought it wasn't responding but it then started going faster and then it went back to slow again. This procedure took over 2 hours. I don't know how much longer over 2 hours it took, as I fell asleep because I did this after work.

NOT all the programs worked, so you may have to re-install the problem programs, again.

You will now need to get the rest of Windows Updates, again. If you have a Vista disk SP0, then you'll need to download SP1 and install it before you can install SP2.

I feel this is a GREAT fix to your problem, it was for me.

Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and

by rickdev67 - 5/31/09 5:58 AM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Windows Vista and Microsoft are INFURIATING when this happens. Also allied to this problem can be an inability to print or to access Control Panel. Messages keep popping up to tell you that "you may the victim of software theft or an unauthorised change has been made to a Windows file". After trying out many forums and suggestions I reloaded Windows Vista. I maintain a Firewall(Windows), Antivirus, Malware, etc etc. I tried to find the source of the problem by running 'sfc' and everything checked out.

So I reloaded and everything works fine now, even better for video!

Check available disk space

by RHBernard - 5/31/09 10:02 AM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had the same problem with Windows XP, but it only affected one of my laptops, the one I determined had the least amount of free disk space. When I deleted some files, and moved others to an external drive, the update succeeded.

I have my Automatic Updates set to "download and notify me" but let me decide when to install them. That way I can have alternatives available at install time. I also have Windows XP Professional, and the options I mention not might be available for XP Home versions, or for "home" versions of Vista, which I have avoided like a plague.

It is possible in a short space situation, when the update consists of several individual files, that some will install but the larger ones will fail. Windows installs multiple files in the order that they were delivered from Microsoft. In this case, I found that, if I used the Custom update option, I could select those that would be installed, so perhaps if there is not enough disk space to install all the delivered updates.

Help PLEASE, I too am not able to install updates for Vista

by ChanellVHalen2999 - 5/31/09 11:16 PM In reply to: Windows Vista updates are available, but won't download and install by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I HOPE and I BEG that someone please help me out...My pc is so sluggish and slow and actually there is not much I have installed on it..I think Windows Vista has more updates downloaded more than anything, until the past several months. First of all I am not a computer genious by any means, I am just your average user with not much expertise regarding tech talk about what I need help with. It's like my computer has stopped recognizing me as the administrator or something. It will not let me update, I cannot change desktop theme, I cannot set up another standard account (well any account as far as that goes), I am not able to defragment disks, back up and restore...well almost anything anymore. When I click on updates my curser just goes around in a circle and nothing appears and the update icon will show up on my taskbar but when I put my curser on it, the icon disappears..I can't afford to pay microsoft for on line help and my pc manufacturer throws me off to my ISP, and my ISP throws me off to microsoft, and it's just a neverending pattern and I am SOO tired of playing "help me out please"tag back and forth with everyone. I just need help on what I need to do to update and there are so many different downloads that sound like they could be what I need but I prefer not to download anything because one may hurt the other, and I need to find out what to update, defragment my hard drive, well actually I would be happy just knowing what I need to do to update and be able to do it. The last updates were in January of this year(2009), and since then I have not been able to do anything. I have done the right clicking to open updates, but I do not get a response when I do it. I saw someone else here at C-net that sounded like they were having the same problems as I am as far as updating and I have so many questions but if I do contact Microsoft, they give me a link to a forum and I have no idea what they are talking about.I have Windows Vista Home Basic, 32 bit OS, and my manufacturer is Everex Impact, there are slots that have the following (but there is nothing inserted in them), ok 1 slot is MS/MSPRO, 2 is Smart Media, 3 is CF 1/11/MicroDrive, and 4th slot is SD/MMC..I know one has something to do with memory but I don't even know how to acquire a memory card or what type..I do not know the model number but I bought it brand new back in late November of 2007. If someone would PLEASE give me a response as to what may be wrong or what I need to do I would be happy to give out some personal info (e-mail or ph. #), as u can tell I am desperate. I would just like an answer from someone who may have experienced the same thing as I, or someone who is experiencing the same thing and if there is a solution before I pull my hair out...I am on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I spend more time looking for answers or help on the net than enjoying it. Once again, I am begging for help PLEASE...Chanel V. Halen
