Hey Darren,
I tried going onto windowsupdate.microsoft.com but it takes me to the google homepage no matter what browser i use, but the address bar still shows as windowsupdate.microsoft.com! pretty strange.
Also, the microsoft downloads link you gave me for the malicious software removal tool, when i click on download it takes me to the next page but no download box pops up. when i click on the 'click here if the box doesn't appear in 30 seconds' nothing happens.
Second, I tried the Wuinstall steps but on the command box it tells me: 'Error occured: Search failed 2 times'
For antivirus, I use Norton 360 v2 and it tells me there are no threats. Do you recommend i still get ESET?
And the services.msc i have tried before but to no success.
Darren's suggested "WuInstall" program worked like a charm. I had been struggling with MS updates failing to install. Tried many of the remedies listed on the forums and asked Microsoft support for help---all to no avail.
Then I downloaded, unzipped, installed and ran "WuInstall" by xeox.com and all the updates were successfully installed. I don't know why the program worked, but it did.
Many thanks Darren.
YOU STATED THE FOLLOWING:
Wuinstall should now tell you it's searching for updates, then downloading updates, then installing updates. Remember there will be pop ups that appear on screen with end user licence agreements you need to accept these for the installation to be successful, if you cancel these the installations will fail. Also some of them (like Internet explorer 8) actually pop up behind all the windows so you need to keep an eye on the taskbar as well.
nb. this process can take quite a long time and at times the computer may seem like it isn't actually doing anything, especially when it's first scanning for updates, leave it going
THERE WERE NO POP UPS OR LICENSE AGREEMENTS TO SIGN. THIS IS WHAT IT SAID "Searching for updates... Criteria: isInstalled=0 and Type='Software"
I have really never learned how to use CMD so I think I did it right. but really don't have updates. I'm using Vista with Sp1 and really think I should have SP2....
This is my daughters Laptop that I'm trying to fix for her with no success. She has not been able to update for a long time. Also I cant go back to an earlier date as nothing has been created... that says no Shawdow copy. I have been to services and feel that everything is running that should be. Thanks for any help you can give me. Also I'm going to try and go direct to Cable and by pass my router and see if that will help. At this point I have no idea what I should do.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
I had the same problem which started when I tried to update to IE8 and couldn't first update the NET framework. After a 3 hour call to the Microsoft help desk in India (they called me back after the first hour!) the conclusion was that permissions on some files had been set by some unidentified software and the only solution was a re-install of Vista. Sure enough, a re-install did solve the problem and my system is up to date.

Earlier this year I experienced the same problem with Vista that you have described. I worked with two tiers of Microsoft's technical support and this, in short, is what we found: trouble began after the installation of optional update KB957200, meant to resolve "some performance and reliability issues in Windows Vista." I can appreciate the irony. I was able to verify this by by twice re-installing Vista and methodically installing the updates as they became available.
If you have installed this update, uninstall it, reboot your PC and take careful note of the computer's performance. If it fails to restart or shut down, if it cannot connect to the internet or your local network, or if the USB ports do not work, you may need to re-install Vista. Whatever course you choose, I think it would be a good idea to contact Microsoft and take advantage of their knowledge and experience.
Good luck.
I had the same problem but after trying 4 or 5 times, it eventually downloaded and installed. This was to download Vista service pack 2, which was a very large file.

Colin
You could try a third party software for optimizing your PC. I know for a fact that TuneUp Utilities [not freeware, but you could use the 30-day trial] has fixes for windows updater.
Hope this helps.
Check the system time and date in Windows and make sure it is accurate. Having the wrong date and time can prevent updates from being downloaded and installed. It can even prevent logging into Live Messenger as well.

The 1st question that comes to mind is, is my copy of Vista legal. The same sort of problem popped up regularly with pirate copies of previous renditions of Windows. If you bought your system from a major computer company or bought the OS from a reliable vendor, it shouldn't be a problem. One of the other posts suggested contacting MS tech support, reloading the OS, or upgrading to Windows 7. I would approach the problem with the same sequence. I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit). It is very stable, even for a not quite ready for prime time OS. The only problem I've run into is several older games that won't run on under, much less install on a 64 bit OS. Good luck.
The same thing happened to me for a few months ago.The problem comes from spywares.SpywareStop program helped me to overcome.Spyware got my windows live hotmail and every passwords.good luck..
the only thing you can do is that re-install the operating system of the windows visita
When it happends to me, I usually have a smart bug keeping me away from the fix. Try this .. I got this from a ATT Dsl tech, I liked it & got the pro (paid version) I use it to sweep before the regular av does it's scan. It works great and the quick scan usually less than an hour on 320gb hdd. AVG was 10 hrs. the buy is try before you buy.

Bugs are never fun. You only get one chance to download a fix, the bug will keep you from returning. You might have to download it on another computer that is ok, then run it on yours.
I just had this same problem and had it fixed by Microsoft. I went to their "live chat" and entered "Can not get Vista updates". The update statement gets Microsoft's attention right now! Microsoft called me back and fixed the problem at no charge.
Turn off any after-market software firewalls, such as Symantic or McAfee. Use Windows Defender while downloading Microsoft Vista updates.
You may also be infected with the nasty conficker virus. See if you can go to an antivirus webpage. If not, you are infected.
