Hi , I will be getting my first Macbook Pro 17" x 2.93 Intel processor x 4Ram,OS 10.5
Have not used a Mac for a very long time.
Would like to use the Apple software whare ever possible and get away from Microsoft Office if possible.
I will be using the MBP for; excel type documents, word text,macros,photos,video/cd/dvd,voip communication, not specialised.
Can any one let me know if the apple system software would do ?
Which one / ones' you suggest ? and
Which application from Microsoft Office would work very well on this
MBP ?,
Is anti virus necessary on the MBP ? Which one ?
Many Tks.
I have given the nod to this a few times -> http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php
I would be duplicating web pages if I wrote how it opens and saves in MS Office formats. Same thing if I mentioned that it is free.
As the virus issue, first we need a virus?

is very different from the Mac you used a "very long time" ago.
This is not System 7, 8 or 9, this is something completely different.
Unlike Windows, there are only two versions of the Apple System Software (OS) available.
1. The retail version which comes with every Mac
and
2. The Server version which comes with every Mac Server.
You will find that your MBP will do just fine with everything you have mentioned and you should seriously take a look at the link, regarding NeoOffice, that was supplied by Bob.
If that is not your cup of tea, take a look at iWorks from Apple. A suite of applications that can open and save as Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents.
As for the AV software, as Bob says, first of all you need a virus.
Enjoy the new MBP

For the photos/video editing/CD/DVD work, a very nice suite of software is included as standard equipment on every Mac. Try iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and Disk Utility for simple CD or DVD burning. I agree that NeoOffice is a worthy free MS Office substitute. Apple's iWork will also create all of the documents that you want and will do it with an Apple flair. The choice is yours. Have fun!

Hi;
As a person retired from a career of taking care of people on PC's and a Mac owner since 3/06/84, I call your choice an excellent 1!
Try to forget everything you know about PC's and older Macs. This will help you learn Leopard & the various applications you want to use, very much.
The best Microsoft Office program to use is, NONE by Microsoft. Use NeoOffice (free) or just buy the discounted iWork license which comes with you UMBP as a demo., to start. It (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote) is much simpler to use and is fully compatible w/ MSO, for the most part.
As for an anti-virus, I recommend ClamXav. It is not for you or your Mac but to protect those whom you communicate with who use PC's, by keeping you from sending them 1.
If you decide to run Windoz under a VM or BootCamp, of course you will want to run AVG Free 8.5 on it and the usual SpyBot and AdAware. I have XP Pro, SP-3 with Open Office & all of these running on my UMBP under VMWare, strictly so that I can help PC Users by phone w/there problems. A trojan still slipped by me & required me to re-build the Windoz!
VR, Ron.
