Re: Windows system restore doesn’t function

First off in all my problems that I've had, I found that if you are running more than 1 firewall or antivirus it is possible that you would be getting this type of error.
try uninstalling 1 of your firewalls and make sure you only have 1 anti-virus and 1 firewall.
Your system will work better with only one installed than trying to double up and make sure that everything is caught by the one that doesn't get caught by the other.

Restore does not function

by Deryl Watson - 5/15/09 9:06 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

This is my answer as I always do. When I can't overcome a gross problem I RELOAD WINDOWS AS IT NEEDS TO BE CLEANED UP EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE TO GET RID OF ALL THE EXTRA GARBAGE YOU COLLECT AND CAN'T GET OUT OF WIN XP. BACKUP YOUR IMPORTANT FILES FIRDT OF COURSE, THEN DELETE AND RELOAD WINDOWS.
WORKS EVERY TIME.

System restore

by jmj947 - 5/15/09 9:43 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had the same problem with my last computer. After much searching and frustration, I found my particular problem. It seems that Ad-Aware software interfered with the system restore. Once I trashed Ad-Aware, system restore worked fine again.

ad-aware was the culprit

Thanks, jmj947. Removing Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition also restored my 'system restore' function.

Cnet sks!

I am sure that a lot of people know more tips, tricks, and tweaks than I, when it comes to Windows XP but I am a practical minded person. I advise my client not to be prepared if their computer will crash but rather for when it will crash. If found that it is much simpler and less expensive to simply reboot a computer then attempt to track down every small infection or virus. And corruption of your restore points is a clear sign that something is amiss.

A few simple steps would be to purchase an external hard drive and copy the entire contents of your “My Documents” folder to that drive. Also export your “Favorites” or “Bookmarks” from FireFox and/or IE. If you use Out Look export the relevant .pst files to the external drive. There are many tutorials that explain how to do this so I won’t add another. Be very careful to confirm that you have copies the files and have not just created links. A link will be a very small file with the extension .lnk and be 2mb in size. It is best to take the external hard drive to another computer and confirm that you can access your files.

You then need to see if you have a valid O/S (operating system disk) for your computer. If you do not have them, your computer my have the option to create a set of “restore” disks. Follow the instructions and create a set. Put them aside.

If think that something has truly infected your computer, get a copy of DBAN and use it to wipe the hard drive. But only after you have all your data backed up and confirmed that it safe. You can use either the original disks or the restore disks to reboot the computer. Just remember to perform a clean installation only after you have confidence that all your data is backed up on an external device.

Do not restore any data from the external device until you have updated the computer to the current service pack and re-installed all security software. Before storing or copying any data files from the external hard drive, scan them to be sure nothing tagged along. If everything comes up clean, then copy and paste and/or import the old files to the new computer.

Be prepared to do this every so often. I have not found a system that is impervious to attacks. It does not matter if you have a PC or a Mac…

The most important thing is to have your files backed up. Or even better… have two or three computers. They don’t have to be new, they just have to work.

Why that comment?

You say, "I can't post anything, even an honest and informative answer to an honest question". I don't understand, especially since you posted your post.

" My Documents on external hard drive"

by recon290 - 5/16/09 7:36 AM In reply to: Cnet sks! by Thomas Kater

Please never do this. External drives are slower than regular drives. If you have a "C" and "D" drive showing-move the "My Documents" to the "D" drive. If you only have a "C" drive showing [listed under my computer] then get a tool to partition "C" into a "C" and "D". You can also create a downloads or My downloads file on the D drive. Always "Save" to your download file and scan the file before running it[install]

A possible fix...

by jrfoleyjr - 5/15/09 10:27 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I think that the trouble is a corrupted hard drive with some hard block or sector errors. I would do a chkdsk /f to fix any disk arrors before going any farther on this trouble. After this follow up with a scan of the registry. You may wind up having to reinstall XP if this doesn't fix it.

Windows system restore doesn't function

by littlemom4455 - 5/15/09 11:04 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I have used many Registry cleaner programs over the years and they can cause some problems. Also using Window defender,AVG Full Edition running with Zone Alarm's firewall, can cause problems. Window defender and AVG is more then you will need to run a good machine. One thing is Window Restore can cause problems with your system if you have a virus and they can get in sometimes, restoring your system can put that virus deeper in your system. It seems to me you have to many program running and they also have a system restoring point in them too.

by randarac - 5/15/09 11:06 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had the same problem in a Toshiba laptop, possible after installing an 'antivirus' . I could not find the reason but I had access to the system and I could save my the information. After that I used the "System Restore CD's" and I got the laptop like new.
