External monitor = mode not supported when primary turns off

by DonQuiyote - 5/9/09 10:45 PM

I can connect my Samsung LA19R with HDMI and use it in duplicate or extended desktop configuration. There are (at least) two resolutions supported, although not the 'recommended' and expected resolution of 1440x900. This works both under Vista and Windows 7.
However, when I try to use a configuration that turns the notebook display of, the Samsung display blanks and instead shows a "Mode not supported" message. This occurs when I close the notebook display (configured to 'Do nothing'), or when I use a presentation setting with external monitor only (from Sony bios utility, NVIDIA control panel or Windows display configuration).
I would lke to be able to stow my computer away and use the external display only, both to clear working space and to conserve power. How can I achieve that?

Sony FZ280E Notebook computer.

External monitor = mode not supported when primary turns off

DonQuiyote,

If it's not a recommended setting as listed in the manual, it may or may not display properly. Have you tried sending ONLY the signal to the external monitor? Sometimes this is achieved by pressing the FN-F(8? 7?) key *twice*, and sending the full resolution over.

Another suggestion?

HDTEch:

Thnaks for the suggestion. However, I get the same result when I work with external monitor only and try to reset resolution.
1440x900 is not only the 'native resolution' according to NVIDIA control panel but is also the specified 'PC resolution' in the Owner's Instructions. Under Display Modes it is listede as the highest VESA mode resolution.
Could there be another part of the configuration that causes this setting ot be invalid? Clock frequency? I have tried experimenting without success so far.
At least I figured out that to eliminate cut-off borders in some settings, there are alternatives at each scale that bring everything back into the window.

Have you updated the BIOS in the laptop yet? I forgot to ask earlier.

I'm running out of ideas, but hopefully something will work.

Samsung HDTV does not work as monitor windows 7

by tingleyj - 5/23/09 7:17 AM In reply to: External monitor = mode not supported when primary turns off by DonQuiyote

Specs:
Windows 7 RC
Dell 9100 / 4GB RAM / ATI Radeon 3850HD
Samsung 61 inch DLP HDTV

I am having the same problem. I can use the TV as a monitor only when I also have my dell flat panel connected as well. If I try to use the TV by itself, the TV says "Mode Not Supported" (this did not happen in Vista) I want to be able to use the TV without the other monitor.

I have tried updating the graphics driver already, I still have the same issue.

Same problem! Any Solution Found?

I just upgraded my PC from Vista to Windows 7 and I've got the same issue now. My HDTV (1080p) works flawlessly as the primary display attached to either DVI port but ONLY when I have a second monitor connected to the other port. As soon as I disconnect the second monitor my HDTV loses signal. I've tried everything I can think of to fix it...
