system restore

by hopelesshanna - 5/23/09 2:06 AM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I am not sure if anyone else has come up with this suggestion (Too many replies to read through) When I had this problem some time ago I disabled Norton Internet Security whilst I performed the task and this worked for me. If you have Norton installed it may be worth a try as it is simply done.Hope this helps.

Perhaps this information will provide the solution:

How to use the Recovery Console to restore a corrupt Windows XP Registry when the PC/computer won't even boot into Safe Mode -

If not perhaps this information has the solution:

System restore

by wizzguy - 5/23/09 10:28 AM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

i had the same problem with my system restore. I tried every possible thing and , believe me , it will get you going for a while but it never gets better, your computer will get slower and slower for some reason. After struggling with this and that my best bet was very simple. Get and second hard drive (internal or external) pass your stuff to it and reformat. i know that in some cases reformating is a big job but alot of times its the solution. good luck.

In Response To Windows System Restore Does'nt Work

by theonly1mooner - 5/23/09 10:42 AM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I know this is not a fix but just a suggestion to eliminate the problem in the future. I personally turned off my System Restore as I use a program called ERUNT "The Emergency Recovery Utility NT" I have been using this program for the past 4 plus years of which it saved me numerous times. It creats a seperate Registery Backup at Each Boot and Places it into a Folder for that day. To restore your registery you run the program ERDNT from the folder from the date you want to restore to. I have mine set to make a backup at each boot for the day. It will not make a copy everytime you boot just the first boot of the day. I keep about 20 days for restore points on hand at all times. You can run this program after booting or in safe mode. I have a link on my desktop to the restore folder to make it easier to restore either in safe mode or normal mode so I can choose which date to restore to. .....................Good luck with your problem

Windows system restore doesn’t function

by TCDESALVO - 5/23/09 12:12 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I suffered the same problem. Mine turned out to be spyware getting in the way. I had Ad-aware, no joy. Bought Fix-It Utilities, again, no fix. Downloaded "free version" of Malwarebytes, and problem solved. Good luck, hope you have same results I did.

System restore fix

by Zeeeman - 5/23/09 2:38 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Have done this several timees and it works. First disable your antivirus program and reboot into Safe mode. Do system restore from safe mode and let your machine reboot into normal mode it should take.

Windows Restore Problem

by Ron_D - 5/24/09 4:45 AM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Developed this problem after purchasing and installing a store bought fresh dvd of the Symantec Norton 360. Norton has been a negative blast and a half. Programs started to freeze up and then the PC just did wacky things. System restoere worked at first but not the way it used to. Then I could not restore to any date "PERIOD" !. Uninstalled/Deleted the Norton. Tried again. No success. Talked to the Best Buy Gurus, on and off the cuff, and got nowhere except for me to waste $200 and have them screw it up. Possibly fixing it and possibly not properly. (I've dealt with them before !) Then in desperation I tried a Safe Mode method for System Restore to see if it would work. Figuring that whatever did me in was from the outside of and not from within the safe partition. My lovely wife had thrown out the boot disc AND the recovery disc so those options were not available. It worked for me and has worked ever since. Then I see these messages. Months after the problem. I will download some for the future. Hope this helps in some way.

Did You Delete Any Files in the System Volume Info. Folder?

by mikecrad - 5/24/09 11:30 AM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I had the exact same thing happen to me once. I ran a virus scan with AVG Free and it told me that some files in the System Volume Information folder were infected with a virus, so I deleted them. It was immediately afterwards that the System Restore function did the exact same thing to me that it did to you. I was never able to correct it. My motherboard died about a week later and since the PC was already almost 4 years old, I bought all new hardware and built a new PC and reinstalled XP Pro.

System Restore Wouldn't Work in Safe Mode

by mikecrad - 5/24/09 11:36 AM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I see that a lot of people have suggested trying the System Restore in safe mode. After I deleted some files in the System Volume Information folder, because AVG Free told me that they were infected with a virus, System Restore wouldn't work in safe mode either. I still got the message that no changes had been made after I (did a system restore in safe mode and) rebooted. I also was running ZA Pro at the time, and turning that off when doing a system restore didn't resolve the problem either.

Norton Antivirus and System Restore

by HolyCow! - 5/24/09 12:21 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

I'm sure there are similar reasons for System Restore to fail, but here's what has proven to be the fix for me (WinXP/NAV 2008/2009):

1. Open the NAV window by double-clicking the icon in the tray.

2. Click Norton Antivirus Options.

3. Under General Options - Settings...

4. UNCHECK "Turn on protection for Norton products".

5. Click OK.

6. Run System Restore.

7. Go back to 1 above and CHECK "Turn on protection for Norton products".

Simple! The antivirus product is protecting itself against System Restore! Look for this when using other antivirus products, too.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this mentioned in this thread already. There may be more than a few folks using NAV or another antivirus product which can cause System Restore to fail. Such an easy fix, too.

Addendum

by HolyCow! - 5/24/09 12:28 PM In reply to: Norton Antivirus and System Restore by HolyCow!

I also wonder how many people have reformatted their hard drives, re-installed their OS, and in general have jumped through major hoops unnecessarily.

As in the olden days, when the first words out of tecch supports' mouths would be "Oh! You should just reformat your hard drive, then reinstall Windows!" Or, perhaps not-so-olden days???

Avoid System Restore

by glen271 - 5/24/09 7:52 PM In reply to: Windows system restore doesn’t function by Lee Koo (ADMIN) Moderator

Unless it is something really important (such as going back to a previous driver), avoid doing a system restore. This feature is unreliable and can cause problems. The farther back in time the restore point is, the greater the chance of there being a problem.
It almost scares me the way some people rely on system restore as a fix-all that is always available.
