i think windows 7 should be a free upgrade to vista. from what ive seen so far theres no wow factor here for me. its a good o.s but i just think its a dumbed down version of vista. with some tweaks here and there. i like it and everything but for me i dont see anything that would make me want to go WOW i need to buy this. vista runs fast and great on my pc. im not sure how long they have been working on it but i think they should of took a lot more time and added more big features.
Free from Microsoft? You are kidding. I found the same thing when I installed Win 7. It is great, but nothing new, after you remove all of the bloatware of Vista. I will not buy any more Windows machines. I am an Apple fan.
it reminds me of a service pack more than a o.s
-> Multitouch
-> Libraries (for grouping of files across folders/drives/servers)
-> Location awareness
-> AppLocker
-> DirectAccess/BranchCache
-> Windows XP Virtualization
-> Action Center
Just to name a few, plus enhancements to the taskbar, the notification area, UAC, themes, gadgets, the Control Panel, power management, and Windows Search. That's not even including the significant performance enhancements and applications updated to include the ribbon interface. That is not a "dumbing down" of Windows Vista; that is the conversion of an operating system that was once called the Windows ME into what most are calling the greatest release of Windows ever. Core improvements were the focus of Windows 7, and by most estimates they have exceeded expectations. With a solid foundation, Microsoft can now look to add the 'wow' factor in Windows 8. In the interim, Windows 7 is a significant and worth-while upgrade.

i got free copy of window server 2008 from dreamspark. they still giving it out. free. then follwoed instruction from web to convert it to workstation. its the fastest ,most secure window yet.
Thanks for explaining the explosion of machines running 2008.
hate to sound like a parrot, but i UPGRADED to the RC from vista ulimate on a 2 year old laptop. the laptop runs MUCH faster and smoother with win7.
there are several improvements in the GDI and video rendering pipeline. also, low-level disk access has been improved. and some xp compatibility features have been dropped in favor of virtualization. so, there are significant changes "under the hood."
to buy Windows 7 to replace XP on Vista on an existing PC. Some will do, most won't, is my guess.
But on a new machine, practically nobody will prefer Vista if they can get Windows 7 for the same rice.

vista works fine for me... i think alot of people gave vista a bad rap for no reason before it was even released people were talking down about it. i never had a problem with it myself. the wow factor should of came in this release. you talk about gadgets? its the same ones that are in vista except for the media center one. no big deal. app locker? im sure most people wont be using that. why should i buy windows 7 if vista works good for me. people talk about windows 7 being faster its no faster than vista for me. its a good upgrade thats it. its nothing revolutionary. it should be service pack 2 minus the task bar of course but i really dont care for the way it looks.
lol.. "rice"
Windows 7 is meant (I believe) for lower-powered computers whereas Vista you basically needed a computer with 2GB of RAM to use fully and have the best experience.
I have been a beta tester for windows 7 since January, and I have to say that for the most part it is the best windows yet. Unfortunately the media player in it totally sucks, but other than that it is a great OS. I am using it on a computer that originally had vista on it, and I must say that it is superior to vista by far. I was also a beta tester for Vista, and it about crashed the "Vista Capable" computer that it was running on, then the release canidate version wouldn't even install, so I had a bad feeling about it out of the box. The main computer I use 7 wasn't too terrible with Vista, but it does run better on 7.
I run Vista on an older desktop that originally had XP on it as well, and it runs very well on it as well. To compare vista to 7 on the older system, I temporarily removed 7 and installed Vista on it, and the computer ran at a crawl. I did a clean install of 7, and the computer is running like new again. Specs on the older computer included 1 GB PC3200 Ram, 500 Gb HD, 2.7 Ghz Celeron processor. I don't recall FSB at this moment, but I know it was somewhere between 533 and 800 Mhz.
Having the opportunity to compare XP, Vista, and 7, I have to say I like 7 the best, then XP Pro, and in a distant 3rd (of the three) Vista.
I hope that this review has been helpful.
I'm starting to think Win7 is what Vista was supposed to be.
Microsoft is going back to normal and not going to sit on any one operating system for 8 years again and I for one am glad for the change, going from single to dual core was nice too.
I don't have any problems with Vista on the various low priced pc's we have and I really didn't notice that much of a speed increase on the one I installed 7 on. The only thing I like in 7 that I don't have in Vista is the tool tip when I hover over my photo folders that shows the names of the first few pics inside, something I used allot in XP and missed in Vista because I work with a web site that I store pictures for and it was handy to find them that way.
There are a lot of great new additions to Windows 7 that make computing, for a lot of people, a lot easier.
