Largely Windows System Restore is full of fail. In XP it only good for manual registry replacement, and in vista it is hit or miss. You are really just crossing your fingers when using system restore. Full image backups using Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost have been the only bulletproof solutions for me.
I have found that some functions of XP can be disrupted by zone alarm.
This is more likely to happen after a ZA update has been downloaded.
It's one of the reasons I have discontinued using ZA.
Try disabling ZA. It might help
I have experienced this for a long time. Zone Alarm operates deep into the operating system and issues arise when a system restore is performed. I had the following advice from ZA.
Disable ZA at startup:
1. Double click the ZA icon by the clock
2. Click Overview, then Preferences
3. Uncheck "Load at Startup" option / Yes
4. Restart computer.
At this point there will be no firewall, so I disconnected the router cable to isolate from the net.
Perform the System Restore.............Should be OK.
Then restart ZA:
1. Start/All Progs/ZA/ZA Security
2. When the ZA icon appears by the clock, double click/Overview, then Preferences
3. Check "Load at Startup"
Reconnect router.
I have found this to work, whereas performing in Safe Mode always failed. Good luck.
Thanks a lot. For the first time in over 1 year I have been able to make a system restore, that worked ![]()
at one point in your fascinating fix for ZA/System Restore conflict fix, you mention:
At this point there will be no firewall, so I disconnected the router cable to isolate from the net.
Would I be doing the equivalent with an existing shortcut on my desktop that I can use to disable and enable my DSL LAN with a right click menu choice -- without touching the modem box?
When I "disable" the connection this way and reboot, it stays disabled until I manually re-set after the re-boot. Someone taught me this trick and it works for every other purpose. Just wondering what you think in this case.
Try creating a new restore point a few days after using a register cleaner. As they can sometimes make system restore throw a tantrum.
You know, I'm not very sure about this, but I would advise you to check your system in safe mode, by scans and stuff, and make sure restore points are actually there.
you are infected with a trojan,i had the same thing happen to me,it eventually, shut down my whole system, even to the point of not booting.if i were you i would back up any important data (excluding any recent downloads, that's how i got mine)and re-install windows.hope that helps
Well believe it or Microsoft has spyware which disables the System Restore after certain updates. Its funny but unfortunate. I use spy-bot search and distroy to remove it. Then do a backup after that. Be very careful which updates to download. I also encourage the use of Firefox due to safty and pleasure.
I think you have an ugly on your machine. This happened to me one time and I had downloaded free software from two cows and it had an ugly attached to it. When I tried to call up my task manger it was blocked, and so was my system restore.
If you tell your machine to install something, your security program usually ignores what it has in it. You gave permission to put in on your machine.. so it lets you. And some software is determined to stay with you even after you take it off your machine.. it leaves this stuff and it keeps sending information to the website, even if you don't have there programs any longer installed.
I had to get into my administrator permissions and find the ugly and delete it.
I used my Help Pages that comes with the XP program to get into that part of my system, and I can't remember how the procedure went to get there.. but I did get there.
Have you tried using the Help Pages yet?.. Try it.. there is an enormous amount of information there to help you in this kind of thing.
Good luck, it took me quite a while to fix this by hunt and try it method.. maybe my time spent will speed your fix along for you.

Jim should certainly find the answer somewhere in one of the above links.
kind regards,
My pc isnt XP is vista but system restore doesnt work either it happen the same that the person who post this I would like too a anwser to the problem thank you
I solved this problem by first restarting my computer in the Safe Mode (do so by pressing the F8 Key right after your computer begins it's startup cycle, you may need to press a couple of times before you get the menu with different startup options). Choose Startup in Safe Mode from the list and then run System Restore. Now it should complete normally and result in a system restored to the date and time you wanted. Good luck!
Hey Jim. It's not unusual for restore points to be invalid. The process is that you keep going back in time to the next Restore Point. One of them will work. Your best bet is to get an external hard drive for doing backups. They are not expensive now. Most, like Western Digital, come with their own backup program. I use Acronis. Well worth the cost and easy to use. I back up daily. Full backup not required everyday. The program will backup changes if you so desire. Or you can choose a full backup each time but not necessary. The rest of this has nothing to do with Restore. I would change the AVG to Avast.I would change your firewall. You only need the Windows firewall. Those who tell you that you need a firewall to check outgoing data are misinformed. The company you are using now was threatened with a lawsuit some time ago and now allows that companys crap to get through.[FunWebProducts] for example.Windows Defender is not a good choice either. There are better free and shareware products that work better. Do the research. Joe
